Why are 80s cars less loved than those from other eras?

I agree about the Golf. My son has had three of all different flavours and he loves them.

 

I remember the Audi Quattro - I loved the design of that car. Didn't it have the drag co-efficient written on the back?

The best 80's car has to be the golf gti. One of the best cars ever made.

 

i dont get old golfs i drove a mk2 gti and it rates as about the 2nd worst car ive driven beaten by a pug 107 and i prefer a 3 clynder corsa

Well, on the other side of the pond here at least the 1980's was the automotive industry's Dark Ages. Increasing CAFE standards (mileage and emissions) basically killed performance until technology finally caught up in the 90's. It didn't help either that the big three were getting cocky and believing the Eastern auto companies posed no threat. I'm still a fan of the 80's though since when I got old enough to get into the hobby the only cars in my price range were from that decade. This was during the collector boom where Muscle era car prices started soaring, so I built what I had and kept on rolling with it ever since.

I'm a huge fan of 80s motors, had a couple of Peugeot 205 Gtis, a 1.6 which I promptly wrote off and then got a 1.9 Alo oown and have owned many Novas through out my 10 years of having driving license. Can agree about rust, my current nova has had welding pretty much everywhere and that is a low millage example. I think 80s cars are the last of the generation to be simple enough to work on with basic tools and not be weighed down with heavy "safety" equipment such as air bags, SIP etc.. but modern enough to use on a daily basis.

Have you driven the MK1? Mk2 wasn't as good. MK1 is the one that is the best.

no but these days i wouldnt touch a vag car with a barge pole i owned a seat it was utter pap and all the ones at work break with alarming regularity

A lovely A road cruiser, rolls a bit but unbeatable comfortable suspension. 1.3L air cooled flat four boxer engine with a dashboard that could have only ever been designed in the 80s.

 

I had one of those. Depreciated spectacularly. Amazing to drive and very weird indeed. The suspension idiosyncratic: no need for a jack as the car pumped itself up. Deflated when parked so the nose might end up resting on a high kerb in a car park, but the ability to increase ride height very useful on camp sites. And the radio placed between the front seats where any normal design would have a handbrake.

Disagree...missus has a W reg Fabia (Vag based)..been bombproof, now on 131k..leaks a bit of oil, but I have the repair seals..just no time to fit!

its luck of the draw. mates brand new fabia lasted 30 mins before needing a tow back to the dealer but i see more issues with them than any other car but thats just my experience

I was too young to drive then, but have driven a few "80s" cars since learning in the late nineties, scariest one, was a 3.0L Vauxhall Senator, with its Digital Speedometer, second was an Audi 100 Avante.

 

That being said, its no wonder they weren't loved, I remember my father having a Austin Maestro, friends dad had an Austin Montego, the Maestro of my dads then got nicked and he replaced it with a decades worth of Sierra's (probably my favourite car my father owned, the Sapphire both lasted about 5 years) then a Rover 216S

 

The 80s was very very hit and miss for cars, especially brands that started to die out, like Austin and Rover
