Plex will gather you all the MetaData to go with each film/tv episode too, which is very good

That will be good to see.. Just indexing my media at the moment which could take some time...

Twonky ftw. Plays anything I want really. I have it streaming to PS3 and media box's around the house. Even got it working with my phone at one point.

Twonky

I had twonky streaming to 11 devices last year all watching different things without any lag on a 100mbps nic.

Just a word of caution - check your collection when it's done! I had all sorts of carp in mine it had matched incorrectly. Most I could get it to match up (there's a "fix incorrect match" button which shows possible results or allows you to do a manual search) but some I had to enter manually. No big deal.

One other nice touch is when used with the Xbox 360, any content ratings are read by the 360 so your parental locks will work; I was chuffed with this as didn't want to have to block little one accessing everything, now she can watch any age appropriate films without me worrying :)

This is true, it will also attempt to stack files with similar names, which is a pain, especially if you have full sets of films such as The Godfather, BTTF etc

Thanks for all the feedback guys... I have moved to Plex, as I have a LG TV they link together which is good.

One question I do have, I haven't really yet had chance to look at any of the settings, but I downloaded the Ipad app, and did the port forward on the router for Plex, but I get a authentication error, but if I try from my local network it runs fine... Do I need to setup a username and password in the system to allow connections from the wAN and if so where??

Thanks again.

i use XBMC (on a Pi!) as a player and as such use SMB shares but also have a backup of serviio running.

Can a PI cope with full 1080P playback?

Yeah it actually has a pretty decent GPU, it's the CPU that lets it down, can make menus quite sluggish (although to be fair, I have a first gen 256mb Pi and haven't tried RaspBMC in a few months now, so things may well be much better now)

yep i play full 1080p videos quite often. its a great system - best money i have spent in a long while for the amount of use i get out of it. a great feature i have found is the ability to use my tv remote to control it via hdmi!
