Switch-on-a-stick, sort of

I'm still getting my head around concepts. I've a network of five Cisco 300 switches with a single VLAN deployment.

 

If I move to multiple VLANs is it basically true that I only need one of the switches in layer 3 mode with a static route set to interconnect the VLANs? I visualise it like a 'router-on-a-stick' configuration where its a switch-on-a-stick rather than a router. Am I on the right lines?

If you have a single Layer 3 switch centrally, routing all your traffic, then you can set all your VLANs (interfaces etc.) up there and then just tag/untag on the remote Layer 2 switches.

 

Even with multiple Layer 3 switches, some of my VLANs are set up in this way because the core switch is the first common switch e.g. my printers VLAN covers the site, so it has to be configured at the core. Other Layer 3 switches closer to the edge have soem VLANs configured on them because the VLAN is only used there (or downstream).
