New cyber monitoring measures to come

With the death of the Communications Data Bill the Government is looking at more targeted ways of monitoring 'people of interest'.

However, aren't the plans to associate people/devices/IPs more closely doomed to failure without international agreement?

What happens when we run out of MAC addresses? I think we figured out you could cover the planet a few hundred times with rj45 sockets before you did, but with mobiles and VMs stretching back decades of MAC address use now, do we start to reclaim those somehow?

 

Only way I see of doing it is without routers when ipv6 comes in.

Sorry have misread that article or is it really as woolly as I'm imaging? From what I can gather it's basically saying...

 

Some backbench MP want's to introduce a bill to give MI5 (or whomever) powers that are technically not possible to use because the proposal to install the great firewall of Britain has been dropped from the queen's speech at the last minute?

 

If it gets through it's just some hogwash designed to appease Daily Mail readers.
