Netware vs. NT

 

Was working with netware at the time, we were using NT for flat domains and exchange 5.5 and netware for file sharing as Nt wasn't stable enough.

 

reading this guys article does make me laugh now though

I did like Novell though - MS products were a nasty shock after Netware - still waiting for an MS operating system that can tell me who is logged on to the network without faffing about!

SUSE is my linux of choice for some reason, seems to be the one i find easiest. standard build for our linux VM's is SUSE we only use otherwise if its a pre-built appliance.

 

i do miss netware

 

windows has got a lot better nowadays though from a stability point of view, (especially because vmware takes care of handling the real hardware)

I remember my first IT job in 2002, where my network manager decided that what the school needed urgently was Netware 5 and Windows 98 rather than Windows 2000 server and workstation.

 

My network manager was a cretin.

An interesting read and it's incredible how much has changed. This bit made me chuckle:

 

"Do you really want your server to be accessible through the Internet? Think about the security issues! A Netware server running IPX can be placed directly on the internet without security concerns. The perfect firewall: A server which absolutely ignores all Internet traffic, without the configuration and maintenance issues of a firewall!

 

Though I suppose it made some sort of sense at the time. Not having ever really used Netware though, I can just imagine it being a giant PITA trying to run something other than TCP/IP these days
