I live in Poynton (and work at Poynton High as it happens)....this was utter chaos when they were doing it, and if I'm honest, I don't see how it has helped. I'm fortunate in that I only have to cross the junction first thing in the morning and it's before the rush hour properly gets going (and the same applies at the end of the day as well)....but as @Achandler says, people don't know who has right of way, pedestrians think it's ok to just step out in front of moving vehicles....how there hasn't been a serious accident I do not know. It looks quite nice though :-)

Interesting opposition there, the copper said they used to visit for quite a few accidents, so if the pedestrians are moving easier/quicker and there are less accidents, surely that's 'better'

They have done this in my (newly) local town, i've yet to encounter it is a have no need to go into town but i hear uncertainty and bad comments from family but i think they are looking at it purely from a drivers point of view. I think we all forget that we are all pedestrians.

Agreed, if there are less accidents and people are moving more freely then yes it must be better.....I just don't know how that's happening, as pedestrians have been told it's a shared space and as a result think it's ok to just step out into the road without looking who's coming

well i certainly wouldn't advocate not being aware of cars moving around me, i guess TPTB are trying to break a decades old view that people are subordinate to cars.

Really, if it is a shared space and cars have to be careful to not hit pedestrians, why shouldn't they just walk about as directed?

You'd be amazed though how many people think it's ok just to step off the pavement and in front of a car without once glancing round to see what's happening.

i agree, that is pretty mental

Where I live we have a shared space, its been in for a few years, its cut down on congestion, accidents etc. What it hasnt done is made the town any nicer! but that could just be my opinion.
