Event ID 1058: Cannot read default domain policy

Any ideas what causes this in our event logs?

 

Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}The file must be present at the location <\\domain.sch.uk\sysvol\domain.sch.uk\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>. (Access is denied. ). Group Policy processing aborted. 2

 

I've manually navigated to the sysvol share and can open that group policy no problems at all. All permissions also seem correct!

Don't know if you fixed it or not, but IIRC I think I had that ID in the event log, and a few others...

Check that link, it might give you some pointers (I didn't get any help either ), I could navigate to the SYSVOL and the GPO as well.

 

Not to worry, I fixed it thanks to weeks of Googling, (actually I found the answer pretty quickly, it took weeks of second guessing myself and working up the courage to do it) but I don't know if I did it properly... I kind of just hit the buttons then crossed my fingers, so I'm not going to be a lot of help on the technical side...

 

Not much info on your set-up (Server OS, single DC or not, etc.) but look for other errors such as NTFRS errors, journal wrap, replication errors, Jet database, can't remember what else I researched.

*Just an edit to say have you checked the policy is still being applied, (resultant set of policy, GPResult or something) try changing an insignificant part of the policy and see if when you force it through, does it replicate the change and filter down to the machines?

 

I hope someone will chip in if there's a better way...
