Hi

While I wait for SIMS to reset my password for their forums, I thought I'd post the question on here.

I have a physical SIMS server running 2003r2 with full sql 2008 installed and the sims db hosted on it.

How easy is it to upgrade the OS to 2008R2?

There is no direct upgrade path to Server 2008 R2 from 2003. You will have to setup a second server (new), move everything to it then get rid of the old.

I would move to Server 2012, it will save hassle upgrading OS again later.

I think its supported on Server 2012 OS but not SQL 2012.

Yep that's right according to roadmap:

SOLUS2 support has been extended 2 releases to include Spring 2014.Windows Server 2003 support has been extended 1 release to include Summer 2013.

Support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 commences from Spring 2013.

SQL2012 support for SIMS & FMS commenced from Autumn 2012.

SQL2012 support for Discover, SOLUS3 and InTouch will commence from Summer 2013.

A migration utility will be provided alongside the Summer 2013 release to assist migrating to SQL2012

We did the migration and SIMS provided some helpful documentation.

We made sure the sims data, sql db and docs storage area were on the same drive letter as before, trying to keep everything lost as it was before.

Went quite well wth no issues for us.

Wow i got something right in the weird world of SIMS.

@10101010 based one @vikpaw reply i would go Server 2012 with SQL 2008 R2. When the time comes then you can upgrade SQL. This is rather simple to be honest.
