Vlans and wpad.dat

Hi all

 

so this week Ive been implementing vlans which have been needed for a while.

 

Ive finally got them all setup how i want i have also got a TMG proxy server running and dhcp setup with a wpad.dat file.

 

The problem im having is some stations will auto configure the proxy settings using the wpad.dat file and some will not and its completely random, also im finding that wireless devices like android phones and tablets dont seem like the wpad.dat file ..

 

so the purpose of this post is im really trying find out how others are serving internet to your vlans ? and if anyone has any idea whats going on here or if i need to find a different approach.

On our internal network we push proxy settings via group policy. For a guest WiFi VLAN we are doing transparent filtering. Transparent filtering is the best option for mobile devices, users have to enter their creditials on a splash page before been able to browse the internet.

Can you get to the wpad.dat file from the browser? is DNS resolving it?

The autoconfig should work fine over vlans, does at my place.

What method are you using for WPAD, DHCP or DNS? If you're using DHCP then you need to add the WPAD option to the scope that is serving your new VLAN.
