HP Proliant ML110 G7 with B110i Storage Controller and 4TB Drives

Hi all,

Does anybody have this server. I've bought two to use a backup servers with a set of 4tb drives. When I go into the raid config, it lets me make a virtual disk with the two drives as a mirror, but only sees 1.8tb of the 4tb drives.

I'm sure I am missing something obvious but have been chasing this around for a while now.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers, Ed

Is the motherboard able to use that much in one Disk? Its best to check teh website to see if it recognizes such a big drive. If it does, Try updating the firmware

This is a stab in the dark but its the only thing i can think of.

Hi Rick,

I've looked through the specs of the controller and the server on the HP website and cannot find anything relating to disk sizes - it just says that the controller supports a maximum of 2 virtual disks.

I was going to try a firmware upgrade, but they only appear to list Linux updates and nothing for Windows :-(

I'm really at a loss and have been chasing my tail on this for a while!

Probably not what you want to hear but it may not support it at all, 4tb drives have to use a different cluster size which most bioses and hardware do not support at the moment. This is why many are usb interface only so they can bundle a controller in there. A future firmware update may fix it but you may have to specificly look for a raid controller that can support it.

To add a little more info to that, you'll need to use GPT rather than MBR when partitioning them, and I think you need a 4k cluster size as opposed to 512k. Some bioses/raid cards will have an emulation feature to allow that, otherwise use the RAID utility to split the drive down, again if supported.

Thanks for all the advice so far everybody. We are using these drives with veeam.

We've got a HP micro server working with these exact drives but just can't get the big drives to work in these servers which is a shame :-(
