Need a solution for emai for students office 365? Is it free for education

I have been set the task to give all our students an email account. we have an internal exchange box but i do not want the kids to be part of this system.

 

Is office 365 free for education we do not have any microsoft agreements so will it be a chargable thing.

 

i only need email and not the rest of the software.

 

has anyone gone down this root.

 

Any tips you can give me

 

I dont need to have it linked to our domain except for having users added through AD if that is possible.

There are two main alternatives that will provide you with free email.

 

The basic Office 365 for education is one (there are extra features that you can pay for) and Google Apps for education is the other
