googlemad Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 OK I need to get my head round our Microsoft Volume Licensing over the summer as part of reviewing various licensing stuff. Sadly the guy who dealt with it before passed away so I'm thrown in at the deep end a little as it were! As far as I can see we have a Parent Program : Open Value Subscription Start Date : 2011-06-14 End Date : 2014-06-30. So why is the renewal date Renewal Date : 2017-06-30? The licenses are listed and for some reason we are licensed for Exchange Server Standard CAL - Device CAL, Lync Server Standard - Device CAL, Office SharePoint Server Standard CAL - Device CAL, System Center Configuration Manager Client ML, System Center Endpoint Protection even though we've never used these products at all! More worryingly, the licenses we do have for Windows / Office (Which state they're for Windows 8 / Office 2013 although I guess that means they also cover the licensing for the previous versions) the 'Effective quantity / Active SA quantity' shows a figure of 282. Should that figure match up how many PCs / laptops the products are installed on? As if so we appear to be under licensed by almost 75%!
localzuk Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 OVS is what we commonly refer to as 'EES'. So the 282 figure matches your 'full time equivalent (ie. someone who works more than 200 hours a year) user who uses a computer' count. With EES you are covered for all devices, but pay per the member of staff count. It sounds like it might simply be that you have the School Desktop pack - which includes windows, office, the list of CALs mentioned and windows cals. 1
googlemad Posted March 26, 2013 Author Posted March 26, 2013 That makes more sense, since we have about 300 staff but not all full time
Ric_ Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 That makes more sense, since we have about 300 staff but not all full time Microsoft has its own definition of full time but a LAR (Large Account Reseller) will be able to help you work out what you need. It is the simplest way to license and you get extra stuff chucked in. It may not be the cheapest method if you only do upgrades of software every 5 years but it will allow you to use the latest and greatest and you can budget quite nicely because you get an annual price for the next X years.
Koldov Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Hi googlemad, just wanted to give Neil@Millgate some rep! He has answered all my questions (in as plain English as is possible for Microsoft Licensing) and is sorting out the mess I found myself in... Kol 1
Neil-Millgate Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Thanks Kol! @googlemad - drop me a pm or give me a call and I will do my best to help you out.
