From what I have read, a lot of Chinese websites only work in Internet Explorer (hence why Windows XP is so popular there). Is Canonical going to do anything in Kylin to help people switch?

Hard to tell, but I suspect the Chinese government can be quite persuasive.

There's alot of people in China who won't be happy about this. A desktop/server/phone/fondleslab OS that they can't make a few quid from by copying.

Indeed. All they need to do is decree 'all sites must work with the official OS by X day, else...'
