Blocking DeviantArt.com

Hi, I am currently having problems with blocking DeviantART. Smoothwall is our current proxy filter but even when i put the address into the custom blocked content it does not block it yet everything else on the list is blocked.

 

Are they hiding behind another address or something? Just a little stumped on this one?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Two possibilities I can think of:

1) Are they using https and your Smoothie isn't set up for https?

2) Is Deviantart in your allow list? (I've done this before - put something in the block list and been cursing when it doesn't block, only to find someone had put it in the allow list the week before!)

Checked both and neither one of them are working really stumping me on this one.

Ok, for a spot of troubleshooting, try this:

Try going to DeviantArt on a PC that it should be blocked on, and note that PC's IP address.

On Smoothwall, goto Logs and reports -> Logs -> Web filter

Under Source IP, enter thc PC's IP address and change the start time to suit

It should list your connection to DeviantArt there along with what policy rules it falls under.

 

Might help to figure out what's going on.

This is what i have found doing the above

That the address when typed into the address bars shows as

also shows code 204? if that means anything?

That's strange... so that's when you type in deviantart.com in the address bar and hit enter?

From googling scorecardresearch.com, it sounds like it's a marketing redirector thing that's installed with some bits of software, so it could be redirecting something maybe?

 

One you get to deviantart, is the URL in the address bar correct, or does it have other things there too?

 

I'm not really sure with this one to be honest, so am reaching a bit!

Yep, the address bar shows the correct address.

 

tried on a clean install to make sure no re director is installed still the same.

 

Very strange at the moment certainly picking my brains apart with it.

IF you you the realtime logs on Smoothwall rather than static logs you will see what it is saying for the site and if it has a rule that is saying Yes to it you can click it and it takes you to the rule page and you can then go and work out why it is getting approved.

Spot on.

You can also filter the realtime logs by domain.

Had a look at the above recommendation and to no prevail, still nothing but i have found that when typing in deviantART: where ART meets application! it does not show as that address in the logs. i get Code (OK 200)

 

 

Has any body tried and successfully managed to block deviantART: where ART meets application!

Just tested this and it really should be as simple as blocking deviantart.com.

deviantart.net holds the images, so blocking this should keep stuff out of google image searches.

Try custom blocking another site and see if that works. If not it may be worth giving support a call.

tried blocking another site that's not already in our block list that that works. it just seems Deviantart.com does not wont to be blocked.

 

Tried all other .com.net.org.uk.biz still nothing. very strange

I'd give support a call. Sounds very odd and I can't replicate it.
