Printer Deployment?

We solved this problem with Data Synergy's PrintMAN tool. This lets us configure the default printer via GPO per workstation. We tried both logon scripts and the GPP approach but the results were pretty hit and miss. They offer a discounted price for schools and were really helpful when we suggested a new feature to remove non-default printers.

Does it let you add a list of printers for each workstation using the GPO policy or just the one default printer?

PrintMAN lets you assign the default printer via policy. There is only one default printer per policy but this isn't really a problem for us because you can use wild cards to specify the printer name and it will find the best match. If you need a list of printers I would suggest it to Data Synergy. When we made a suggestion they came back a few days later with a free update accommodate us.

@gdrinkall, I think we have something similar going on here. In fact, it's now got so weird that ALL printers now say they failed to deploy in the Application Log... but most of the time they actually do?!?!

 

The one Application Log error that definitely means it won't deploy is the data area passed to a system call is too small one.

NobleGuy thanks for this, I've also been struggling with GPP printers that were hit and miss as well as very slow, scripts that were also hit and miss and easy to enter information incorrectly. Just trailling PrintMAN at the moment and it does the job simply for setting the defaults. Computer based policy to deploy and it's knocked a good 10 seconds off our login time compared to GPP

We use GPP going on 2 1/2 years now. No issues. Deploy printer to user with item-level targeting on the computer group.

 

A printer group for each printer

A GPO for each printer.

 

Put the computers into the proper groups, printers get deployed to the user based on what computer they log into.

 

We have 250ish printers across 7 campuses.

Any reason it's based on computer security group rather than OU?
