Hi

We are thinking hard about BYOD in the classroom for students. I have some ideas already such as research and voting but I am wondering if any schools have already gone down this route and whether it was successful or not. Any information would be great on what your teachers do in the classroom with BYOD and what policies need to be put in place to promote it and prevent abuse.

Thanks

We are doing ours shortly

Have a separate VLAN setup. It can't get on anything apart from our remote access solution. The connect and go to the web address of the remote access service. They login using AD username and password. They are then connected to a terminal server. They then get an environment same as the standard computers. Usual AUP applies.

they can't get any internet without using the browser in the TS environment.

We wont support the personal devices only the actual session.

All our students are required to bring there own device, teachers rely on them having the devices in lessons. All devices connect to a Student VLAN with access policies handled by a mix of Bradford and lightspeed. We have scripts to setup printing (Followme) and private and shared filestore. Apps are available via TS. Most of these are currently Windows only however over the summer we are upgrading the filestore, printing and TS to support Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, *nix and ChromeOS as far as is possible. So by the new academic year (Almost) any device will have - Internet, email, filestore, printing and remote apps. The students device setup initial setup is automated and we do support the services and the students devices, even arranging warranty repairs.

Similar to FN-GM

the students must register for the service ( 6FM only ) and accept the extended BYOD Policy.

When they connect they get ONLY a connection to our VDI desktop environment and nothing else, so the experience is almost the same as using one of our own devices.

Only launched a couple of weeks back and waiting to see what the take up is.

P.S....

We have also prevented peer-2-peer connections on the wireless to prevent students from connecting to each other using our network. Both to reduce bandwidth miss(use) and keep pupils laptops secure from each other.

How do you do that please?

Your assuming all users are connected wireless :)

In this instance yes, we are assuming all wireless. And we use the MERU internal firewall to prevent traffic.

We are thinking about putting Cisco port security on all fixed ports, it's a very easy task to implement but may be tedious to administer long term.

@bclarke - is your question relating to the technical aspects of doing this, or the in-classroom / teaching and learning aspects?

Either way, remember to amend your AUP to include not using the camera in the device to photograph/film other students or teachers, and to ban coming off the wireless and using (unfiltered) 3G instead.

A good point enjay. I am looking at the teaching/classroom use initially but the technical aspects play a huge part too.

That's where we're looking at the moment, too. There is a strong desire from management to implement wireless and BYOD because it sounds good and because "everyone else is doing it". The next step is to look at what this actually means from a classroom viewpoint, what the teachers do, what the students do and how lessons will be different (and hopefully better) as a result. We've found plenty of people to talk to about the technology, but much less to talk about the human element.
