Stuart_C Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 I've recently been experimenting creating RTF reports to do some more complicated stuff. Whilst it's been about as fun as it can be I'm having problems with something. When I create the RTF template and alter the margins (in this report though I have the same problem with columns), create my report then use the "save and close" in the add ins. Report runs fine. When I go back into the RTF template to make more changes the margins default back to the original setting. Why and how do I stop it.

creese Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 This is for Landscape/Portrait but may well work for you: Please follow the below steps; 1. Go to Reports | Design Report and select 'New' option 2. Select Report base in the 'Select Data Area'. Click Next. 3. Make the necessary selections and click on Next until the 'Define Presentations' option is reached. 4. Double Click on the 'Form Report (RTF)'. Then Click on the User Defined Template option, clicking 'Yes' to start with Blank Template. 5. A Blank Template will be opened in Word. Change the Page Setup of the Template to Lanscape/ A4. Add the required fields and format the Template as needed. Click on 'Save and Close' option. 6. Click on the 'SaveAs' button in the SIMS application. Give a name to the Report and click on Ok. 7. Close the Design Screen. A message box will appear to confirm the changes to the Report. Click on 'Yes' button. 8. Run the Report using the Reports-> Run Report option and select the report. If the above steps are followed then the user defined formats are retained. If the Template is edited - the settings are lost and the template would need to be set up from NEW again.

I think that's the problem that's being queried, isn't it? Why do you have to set it all up again just because you've gone in and edited it? (Unfortunately I don't have the answer, just trying to clarify because I'm interested myself...)

vikpaw Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 I've always had this issue. i tend to make a back up of my template so i have a backup, and can always just open that for editing if things go wrong. the QRS explains exactly how to do it. the name needs to be .rtftemplate or something like that. i guess it's because rtf edited in another app wouldn't have those settings...? same as when you save csv in excel? or am i just talking tosh.

Sivadam Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 This issue has always been with us and continues to be so. Personally I ensure that the rtf works in the sense of delivering the data that I require. Formatting the page is the last operation I do.

That's always great, until you get "That's fantastic, it does all I asked you to do and more....... but could you.........." I had a Head the other day, asked him exactly what do you want? Gave it him, "Great but......" This happened 3 times.

It is a really old method of transfering text between Word Processors. The benefits that it gives in Reporting far outweight the problems, IMHO.

Unfortunately one cannot legislate for those that do not provide the correct information in the first place. At least it only takes a few seconds to re-instate the Page setups. At one time you also lost the Font Settings, Table Settings etc. At least it doesn't do that anymore!

Eeek, don't even suggest it, I'm certain that our MIS has a dedicated faults department as there is no way they could generate that many issues without a concerted, organised effort. I am seriously worried that they may take you seriously and spin up a whole nother office to help with the effort. BTW our MIS is not SIMS and I have never even seen SIMS in action so I am not attempting to make any comparison or correlation.
