Hi,

I am having a real nightmare trying to get to the bottom of this error:

IMG_7283.jpg

We are running a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 10 with Chrome deployed via Group Policy.

What I am finding is that some pupil user accounts will work with flash on Chrome, and others will not, but all on the same computer.

I have logged on as an administrator and the website; LightBot.com works well, although initially, when you first visit it, you need to allow "Run Flash" in Chrome.

What I am finding with the bad user accounts, is that Run Flash in Chrome is allowed, so there should be no reason it is not working. I have tried resetting profiles, it doesn't seem to make any difference. Sporadically it will work, then it doesn't. As you can imagine, it is causing a real headache as ICT lessons are a mishmash of working computers and non-working ones.

From an administrator's point of view, this is a good resource as it requires minimal work from me (no MSIs to install etc), so I am keen to get this working for the staff.

Any ideas?

We are running Server 2012 with Ranger 8.0.0.1

Have you tried forcing it to always allow flash for it? You can set in GPO to allow to run and launch without any clicks etc, might remove that side of issues.

i thought that had stopped working on newer versions of chrome?

There's a new version of the GPO from about a week or so ago but works fine here (last I checked anyway :p)

There's the default flash setting to allow, and then the "allow plugin" option too which you can either put individual sites in or * for all http and https and it'll pre-run them all.

Thanks Steve,

I can't find that setting on my GPO. Where exactly is it?

We've had this happen intermittently for several users, and for the same website as yourself. Nothing we did in Chrome worked, however other users on the same machine could use the site fine. In the end just used Edge for the users where Flash wouldn't work :getmecoat:

Which of the two? :p

Google/Google Chrome/Content Settings

Then either:

Allow the Flash plugin on these sites

https://*

http://*

or

Default Flash setting Enabled

Default Flash setting Allow all sites to automatically run the Flash plugin

Hmm, strange, I don't seem to have it either...

@Steve21 I've got no GPO setting that specifically mentions Flash. However there's one called "Allow plugins on these sites", that be enough?

I cannot get this working for the life of me.

I have set the following;

Google/Google Chrome/Content Settings

Allow the Flash plugin on these sites Enabled

Allow the Flash plugin on these sites

http://*

https://*

Default Flash setting Enabled

Default Flash setting Allow all sites to automatically run the Flash plugin

But when I visit websites I still get this;

Flash.png

I have just pushed out Chrome for Enterprise v63.0.3239.132

And Flash v28.0.0.137 - All three packages; install_flash_player_28_active_x, install_flash_player_28_plugin, install_flash_player_28_ppapi but same result.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Just tested that site on my test teacher and loads fine without any prompt. You sure you don't have GPOs clashing to deploy settings?

Will try it on my student one that's more locked down

I've just ran a GP result and everything looks as expected;

Flash2.png

- - - Updated - - -

Although from your image, you sure you aren't blocking it with adblock? :p Seeing it's highlighted up

Steve

I've just uninstalled AdBlocker+ to confirm that this isn't causing an issue and doesn't seem to have made a difference. :-(

OK

I have now set "Google/Google Chrome" GPO to "Extend Flash content setting to all content" Enabled

Which has now changed the message displayed to "Couldn't load plugin"

Is anyone willing to upload their full Chrome GPOs for me to compare?

This is my settings for Chrome

For Staff we have next to nothing in it if I'm honest (that's the test account I tried earlier and it worked fine on):

Will try it on students as they're locked down more and see what happens

Just tested student lockdown and works fine on that too.

If you click on the secure button (next to HTTPS) on the Reading one does it say flash is allowed etc?

Ah!

Ok I have just discovered that on Windows 7 clients (majority of the site) changing those GPOs has indeed fixed the issue and Chrome is working fine with Flash content.

On Windows 10 clients however changing those GPOs has resulted in the couldn't load plugin message. I do not push the flash MSIs to our 10 clients as I was under the impression that Flash was included in the OS. Am I wrong or do I need to do something further on the Windows 10 clients to kick this to life?

Cheers

From my understanding and I may be wrong here, but I thought Win10 included Flash "within Edge" but not as a system part etc. Chrome would default to it's own pepperthingy flash one.

If you go to the Adobe test page in Chrome does it say it's loading Adobe flash ok?

So in both Internet Explorer and Edge, it says that Flash Player is included with Windows 10.

In Chrome I get this (Note: Adobe Flash Player is built-in, but may be disabled. Click here to troubleshoot Flash Player playback.);

Chrome.PNG

And if I go to chrome://components/ flash is listed there;

Components.PNG

I'm not sure whether to try and install the PPAPI flash package on my Windows 10 machines to see if it cures the issue.

It says "Component not updated" but from what I can see on the Adobe site, 28.0.0.137 is the current version.

I decided to go for it and push out the PPAPI package via GPO to our Windows 10 clients. Bingo. Flash in Chrome has been restored.

Thanks everyone for all your help!
