This is not, for once, a cry for help. This is a 'it's taken me 3 days but I've bloody well done it and here's how.'

 

First of all, this is in no way a Lenovo bashing thread, or an ICT direct bash either. It's just information that someone else might find useful.

 

The Lenovo M58p contains an Intel ME aware bios and this is where the complexity lies. It also appears that the M58 shipped with WOL not working out of the factory!

 

There are a number of whitepapers and guides from Lenovo about how to make this work, but none of the guides are actually complete.

 

You will need the following things:

• A Lenovo M58.

• USB stick

• The following reading material:

o Wake-On-Lan (WOL) does not work with the ME Power Package set to 1, 2, or 4 - ThinkCentre M58, M58p - Lenovo Support (US)

o Wake on LAN (WOL) may not work without installing the full network driver package - ThinkCentre M58, M58p - Lenovo Support (US)

 

• The following software:

o Latest Bios revision: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_bios/5cja77usa.zip

o Latest INTEL (not Lenovo) network driver package: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18713/Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-7-

o Latest ME firmware as discussed in whitepaper 1: Intel Management Engine Firmware Update Tool (version 5.2.50.1039) - ThinkCentre M58, M58p - Lenovo Support (US)

o Thinkcentre Updater: ThinkVantage System Update - Lenovo Support (US)

OR

• ME Drivers: Desktops and all in ones :: ThinkCentre M Series desktops :: ThinkCentre M58p - Lenovo Support (US)

• INF Drivers: Desktops and all in ones :: ThinkCentre M Series desktops :: ThinkCentre M58p - Lenovo Support (US)

 

 

Depending on the state of your M58 when it arrives, not all of these steps may be necessary, but for completeness I have included all steps required to deal with a virgin machine. I ran all of the steps below from a USB stick as network connectivity gets interrupted repeatedly during install processes.

 

• Boot into windows, use the bios tool to flash to the latest bios. When the latest bios is installed set the following conditions with in it:

o Power tab -> Automatic Power On -> Wake On Lan: Set to PRIMARY

o Power tab -> Automatic Power On -> PCI Wake Up: Set to PRIMARY

o Save settings and exit.

 

• Boot into Windows, use Thinkcenter updater to update all device drivers to latest versions, or use the separate INF installer and ME driver to install ME/AMT and Chipset Drivers.

 

• Reboot windows after previous step and use device manager to ensure Intel ME device (Shows as PCI controller) is installed correctly, then use the ME firmware updater to install the latest version of the ME firmware.

 

• Reboot Windows after previous step and then use CTRL+P to access the ME/AMT config pages at boot time. Set the following conditions in ME/AMT setup:

o Set new admin password, default is ‘admin’ but new password requires to be 8 or more characters, have uppercase, lowercase, numbers and punctuation in it

o Home Screen ->InteME configuration -> Y to ‘system resets’ question -> Intel ME Power Management -> Intel ME ON in host states -> Set to Scenario 3 ‘ ON in S0, S3, S4-5'

o Escape out of these screens to home screen and then Y to save changes.

 

• Boot into windows, install the network driver package. When network driver package is installed go the properties of the card as described in whitepaper 2, go to the power management tab, set the following:

o UNTICK: reduce link speed in standby

o TICK: Wake On Magic Packet

o TICK: Wake on Link Event

 

• Apply changes. Do a complete reboot cycle and then power down again and then test.

 

I have tested this set of instructions using the following tools: PowerCmd utility and Impero built in management.

 

**EDIT: This set of instructions also work, with small interpretations, on the M82 as well. I expect, but this is not tested, that they would also work on the M90**

It boggles my mind that there was so much work involved getting this to work. Frankly, OAKTECH, I applaud you for hanging in and pushing through to the end of that 3 day ordeal.

 

Even more so for taking the time to publish this.

 

I screwed around for about 3 hours getting this to work, following your excellent guide. Now that I've done it once, I know I could do it more quickly, but it amazes me that configuring Wake On LAN on what is supposed to be an Enterprise-class workstation should be so incredibly complex.

 

Thanks for this - it is now working perfectly, using either Labtech or NirSoft's WakeMeOnLAN.
