HPC LS6090 PRO Edition Laser Cutter (Software issue)

Afternoon, our technology department recently took delivery of a HPC LS6090, and it requires a piece of software (LaserCut 5.3) to be used to transfer files to the machine. This software won't work without a dongle (Senselock Elite IV) plugged in. It works fine with admin level permissions, but the software fails to recognise the dongle is plugged in and won’t launch as a limited-user (A message to the effect of please plug the dongle in and re-launch software) pops up. You can see the dongle is plugged in as a device as this limited-user account under devices, but the software doesn’t seem to recognise it.

 

I’m not convinced the dongle will work without admin rights but does anybody have any experience of getting this software working for non-admin users?

Hahaha oh god help you. The whole setup is diabolical - I'll give you our scenario: We have one of these Chinese laser cutters, it works with EasyCut or LaserCut (which is just the newer version of the software). The software requires the 'softdog'(!) to be plugged in to load. We originally set this up on Windows XP, which was fine but the drivers for the dongle were unsigned. Fast forward to our migration to Windows 7, and it was a total nightmare to get working. We only run x64 versions of Windows, for which there is a driver but it's unsigned and Windows 7 won't allow it to install unless the OS is run in Test Mode, permanently. This is a right pain in the behind, and if the dongle is plugged into a different USB port at any point it can all fall apart. Then, I had to use psexec to run the software as admin - never could get it to work as a standard user. Of course - this comes with risks but better than giving the user admin rights! The whole thing is a right bodge, and when our laser cutter finally dies (which I hope is soon) I will laugh at any company that tries to sell us the same sort of junk.

This is what you get when you buy a cheap Chinese laser system I am afraid!

 

Any user that needs to use it needs to be a local administrator on the PC for it to work. For this reason, only my DT teachers are able to use it. The pupil puts the file in shared area and the DT teacher prints it with them. Seems to work well like that. I wouldn't make pupils local administrators.

Thanks for the responses, giving the few teaching staff who are trained to use it admin rights on the machine which will solve it. Hope they don't lose the dongle, £150 to replace!
