One of our student helpers has come back from a University and has seen software which displays a list of unoccupied computers in the library and other areas etc.

I've had a quick look and found this software from a sponsor - has anybody used it- is it anygood?

I'm going to download the trial and play but wondering if anybody has any expierence of this software?

Or any software which is similar?

What a good idea - hadn't thought of that before. Your link does seem a little pricey, so I'd be interested to hear about experiences too and/or alternatives too.

Does anybody here work at a university in portsmouth? As apparently this is uni they looked at!

I'm going to send them an email to find out.

We are implementing a system to do exactly that at Imperial just now.

webman has an open source system that tracks logins presumably this would be able to show what computers were currently free?

Ben

do you have a link to it?

is it custom made or a company's software?

It's home brew. The login script writes to a syslog server as a user logs on and I think that data is analysed to see which machines have a user on them. I know it also does more than that but I haven't seen the actual code.

I think we will eventually go live with a mobile app so people can check for free machines - we have a very lightweight web page at the moment which can show every cluster and the number of free machines.

I think is going to be a good start - I can then adapt the output forms to how i would like it formatted.

I will check with Webman that hes happy for me to share the final page but as long as he is I will do.

He's released it as open source so you can do what you wish with it under the realms of the licence.

But I'm sure he won't mind anyway :)

Ben

I know that i more mean distributing extras if others would like it.

What are you changing in it?

I've not changed anything with the login tracker just another page to go in it that looks to see if there is a user active on any machines name lib-% for libray and counts them and displays that 10 out of 20 in use.

ill finish it when back from holiday.
