Intune and Papercut Mobility Print client

Hi all

 

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, it kinda straddles several topics.

 

We're looking at rolling out a bank of laptops using Intune/Autopilot. The whole process is going very well but we're stuck with one exe, which is the Papercut Mobility Print Client.

 

Has anyone had any success pushing this out using Intune?

 

The command line options are good but we can't seem to find how to prompt the first user for their username and password to authenticate them on the papercut server.

 

Just interested in whether anyone else has got this far in their journey yet.

Alas no, we didn't. We asked our knowledgeable managed print provider, who were very helpful, but ultimately we couldn't get a list of switches. There are switches available, but they seem to be for the installer software rather than the papercut software that's being installed.

 

In the end, we reverted back to just telling the kids to use Web Print and upload their PDFs to the web print portal or to email them to printing@. The school were fine with this as it's another reason for the kids not to print, which ultimately saves money.

 

If you do find a solution, post it here, as it would be nice to get this sorted.

thanks for letting me know. We are trying to use the mobility print for the Intune managed devices, at the moment we are installing it manually.

Can’t you place the papercut client on a server and have the pcclient as a startup item from a unc? EDIT sorry didn’t read the whole issue...not the solution... Edited April 26, 2019 by johnpd

We actually have an update coming up in 19.1 that will make it possible for you to deploy a small client via Intune. The client does a few things.

- Deploy print queues, including a native driver, default printing options and capabilities like stapling, hole punching etc.

- Authenticate the user, so the computer does not have to be joined to a local domain.

We use Follow Me printing. I can take a reference machine and clone the \\server\FollowMe printer and deploy this. However as some of our devices are not on the domain (log in via Intune) then the printer never installs. It seems to only install if I manually browse the server and authenticate. Even when installed, printing does not seem to come though.

 

Am I missing something obvious?

When your computers are not joined to a local domain, for example, connected to Intune only, then you need to

1. Install Mobility Print on your print server and publish your "FollowMe" print queue.

2. On your reference machine, install your "FollowMe" queue, but instead of your normal server shared queue, use the Mobility Print queue.

3. Update your driver, default setting and finishing options based on what you want to deploy

4. Run the cloner, and deploy this Mobility Print cloned queue to your Azure joined computers.

 

This page explains how to install printers on computers joined to Azure AD / Intune.

 

For these non domain joined computers, users will receive a once off authentication popup. Note, that if the default text is not optimal for your organisation, then you can customise it.

If you setup PaperCut to sync and authenticate with Azure AD over Secure LDAP, then the Print Deploy once off authentication will authenticate the user's credentials against Azure AD. So it does help with authentication and you can get rid of any local Active Directory.

When setting up a Mobility Print queue on a computer, a generic driver is installed. When the print job is received at the Mobility Print server, it is reprinted to the print queue on the server using the driver you installed on the print queue.

 

However, when you deploy a Mobility Print queue using Print Deploy, Print Deploy assumes you are happy with the driver, default settings and finishing options that was installed on the reference computer. Therefor, when the print job is received at the Mobility Print server, the job is not reprinted, and instead the spool file is passed through to the destination queue as is. My suspicion is that the driver installed on your reference computer is not compatible with the printer. Try to manually update the driver, and then clone the queue from the reference computer.

I would like to know if you managed to solve this?
I want to do the same thing, deploy the Mobility Print Queue using the Print Deploy for the non domain devices and for Intune devices.

We have been deploying to our Intune devices and its been working for last several years.

You need to get a fresh Windows computer (reference machine) that has access to the print queue and install the printer queue you want to deploy.

Then use the cloner tool which will upload the printer queue to the PaperCut Print deploy portal >> Then you make the print queue available to the users.

Then deploy the print deploy client via Intune which will pull the print queue.

We have Print Deploy client set with Office 365 SSO which will authenticate the end user.
