[wanted] BBC Basic or Commodore

Hi Guys,

 

As part of our coding curriculum I am building a 1980's classroom and was after a machine that ran BASIC if anyone had one?

 

I am also building a display on digital and analouge storage so if anyone has any;

 

5 3/4 Floppies

Zip disks

 

Or other forms of unique storage I would be interested.

You'll struggle as they're worth a small fortune - keep an eye out for local auctions & house clearances for the best chance of a reasonable priced one otherwise you'll be £50+ plus for a typical untested/faulty models on Ebay for pretty much anything Spectrum upwards. C64s tend to go for around the £80 for the proper models or £60 for the C64C versions. BBC's you can add a 1 to the front of that price - there's a large market for vintage computers.

If you don't have the funds then a natural suggestion would be to Raspberry Pi it with any emulator you see fit but of course then you don't get the real deal with the relevant peripherals, and at that point you may as well just install an emulator on any PC.

Microsoft had a program years back called Microsoft Small basic. I think it has been superseded though with an open source variant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Small_Basic.

Yeah, I figured as much;

 

The idea was to use an emulator for a PC suite but then have a real C64 running up the front.

 

TBH the project has been put on a back burner due to Corona.

I really wish I could go back 15 years when retro comuting/gaming stuff was being almost given away. I recall Mega Drives going for about £10 and Spectrums, Commodore 64's and BBC's being very cheap.

I remember (to my now great shame) recyling a load of BBC Micros back in about 2001 after someone needed the shelf space and there were no use for them in the first school I worked at.

I'm kinda happy that there is now a real enthusiasm for this kit and it's not going into recycling/landfill, but prices have got quite high as of late.
