Discovered this yesterday, found vid2mp4.net which does a similar job.

No, they didn't.
They asked them to stop allowing people to download videos without a download link.
Zamzar responded by removing the software and making out that big-bad Google ordered them to do it.
Also, and I loved this bit [from a tech support point of view], "We realise that the ability to download and view YouTube videos locally will be missed by many of you (especially teachers)".

These are people with degrees. People in charge of shaping the minds of children. You'd think they would understand the what "NO" means.
