  1. thanks jake didn't know about that one.
  2. been using IE7 for a while now. Really like the Right click open in new tab, find it really useful. any way a couple of days ago i realised the option was missing from the right click menu. Just found out that if you install google toolbar it gets rid of that option. If u disable google toolbar it comes back. so i've got a choice, google toolbar or right click open in new tab. so how people are gonna say use firefox?
  3. at my last school we called all the laptops in over easter i think it was. i was supprised by the number of staff that couldn't bring there's in coz they had given the laptop to there son/daughter who had taken it to University.
  4. the only ones ive done in the past are some toshibas that we had at our old school. we had about 70 of them, they were about 3-4 yrs old, 1 or 2 of them we completely dead ie drinks spilt over them. so i decided to take one apart. after that i didn't mind swapping a few screens around and taking the hard drives out but that was about it.
  5. ill give uklaptoprepairs a try and see what happens. not sure what make they are they were purchased before i started (random local supplier) 1 of them keep overheating and shutting down and the others got a faulty cddrive. had a quick go at trying to take it apart but haven't got the time, to do it. id rather pay someone that mess it up myself.
  6. hi ive got a couple of laptops that need repairin, just wondering if any of you could recomend any compaies that you might have used in the past. thanks.
  7. not sure how much it cost but have a look at http://www.handheldlearning.co.uk/ 1 they've got loads of usefull info. 2 we had bloke from there come and see us they had a program called PAMM i think, that lets you deploy software, files, settings etc.

    sonic.xls

have a look at software restrictions in group policies, if you do it as a hash file it works even if they rename the file.
  9. the card printer we have is fairly good, its just a case of creating a decent report in sims. which can be a pain. exporting to excel is easy and useful, but never been able to create decent looking word templates.
  10. the finance department at my place went out and got a card printer (zebra p110) and the software from some random company. the software is rubish. ill see if i can find out what it is called. the main problem your gonna have is photo's yes you can export the photo's from sims but only into a word document. the software we had needs the photo's in a folder, (any one know how to save all the pics off a word document and put them into a folder???) over the last few years when the photo's have been taken, all we receved back from the photographers was a cd will all the photo's in, all numbered, but no student list to match it up, so the office had to get students to go through it and name all the kids. the card printer is fairly good, what you can do is design your own template in word and then just use a mailmerge and print to the card printer.
  11. ok, its just decided to fix itself, there is nothing in the eventlogs, cant see how an AD problem would stop you from opening my computer, i know that it checks the network drives as it opens, i was guessing that it was something to do with that, gonna have to keep a close eye on it see if i can find out what it was.
  12. about an hour ago, my network decided it didn't want to work internet works fine, can ping evrything, no errors in the event logs, but if you click my computer the pc freezes up and takes about 10mins to open, its doing this on all the pc's if you try and log on, it lets you put your username/password in, then you get a blue screen for about 5 mins before it logs in. ive restarted all the servers and all the switches, its not a loopback, coz ive had one before and that kills the whole network, any ideas thanks,
  13. my setup is a bit like edie209 ive got machine setup at the other side of the building, everything backs up to there, once a week i copy the main backups to a external harddrive and store this off site (well in the boot of my car) recently our local lea support (Ediss) have started trialing a backup solution for SIMS mainly aimed at the primary schools coz there renowed for not taking there backups off site. basically every evening the sims backup is ftp'd to them. the main problem with any backup that involves human interaction ie taking things off site is that people forget.
  14. the exams are £88 ext VAT, so depends whos paying, ive paid for a couple out of my own pocket so it does end up just over £100. keep an eye on the microsft site the have the occational offers the last one was a free retake if you fail. last year they had a buy one get one free offer.
  15. i sorted it, over the weekend over the summer i changed from \\server\%username% to \\servername\share\%username% i added auth users > list, same as ajbritton mentioned. tarquel, the reason i changed it is so when i create new users in AD, i just have to put \\server\share\%username% as there home folded and it creates the folder and sets the permissions for you.
  16. im gonna dial in over the weekend and try a few things ill let you know if i get anywhere
  17. Okay everything was fine yesturday, but came in today and people are complaining that they cant access my documents. if you go to my computer > u:\ drive works fine if you click my documents on the desktop works fine but if you open any program, click open or save then click my documents you get access denied if you click my computer then u:\ drive it works fine please help before i go mad.

    Winpopup thingy?

just downloaded and tried wildfire look pretty good, anyone managed to connect it to AD?
  21. i installed it from the disk, ill try it from the image see if that makes a difference. anyway its pub time so it'll have to wait till monday. have a nice weekend
  22. its just a pain, coz, you can do a full install, but it want's the cd to start the program after the program has started you can take the disk out. the main problem ive got is kids keep scratching the disks. and the cd drives keep getting vandailsed. its only for the music room 10 pc's ive only had a quick go at getting it working. saved an iso image of the disk installed dance ejay installed Daemon tools installed daemon script created a script that loads the disk. and starts the program but it still asks for the disk. im assuming that theres some protection on there but thats where i get stuck. and yes it is the devil incarnated. the other thing that annoys me is that last summer the music teacher spent a stupid amount of money on music software, a load of the sony stuff, cubasis, fruty loops etc, all of which are really good proffessional bits of software, but they necer get used. they only ever use ejay. anyway that enough of my ranting. any idea's (shooting the teacher is not an option, already though of that one)
  23. do any of you use ejay? have you had any luck getting it to work on daemon tools? or a any other virtual drive. or anyone manage to get to work without the CD thanks
  24. the students aren't a problem they could probably deal with clicking a button, its the staff that would p_ss me off, you all know what there like. the other thing is i have deep freeze installed on most of the pc's so it would reset everytime. seems to okay now, still need to to 1 more image so will try and find out which program was causing it.
  25. managed to sort it out, copied the ntuser.dat file from a user to the default user. will try and find out which prog was causing it. but need to go round and ghost all the machines over the next couple of days.
