  1. Confused slightly.. so storage spaces direct you dont need other servers or nodes for fault tolerance.. ie: mirroring can be done.. so jbod 10 drives, 5 drives in each mirror i assume? Also confused, some seem to praise storage spaces with 2016+, while others bash it as not ready for prime time or production use.. but if you are doing DPM 2016 and want space savings you need Storage spaces and refs (they go together i think).. has me leaning towards just doing raid10 or raid6 again on the new DPM server box just to be safe, dont gain any space savings with 2016 though.
  2. I just spotted this thread.. i have a similar question over at this thread. I'm still trying to get a handle on storage spaces.. i've looked at the pages related to it.. do you not need a controller card to leverage it.. unsure how a 24 bay chassis with port expansion (12gb sas) would work exactly, maybe a port off the motherboard.. and on fault tolerance.. how can you do a raid 6 equivalent on one single server.. in our case its for DPM 2016.

We are in the process of buying a new server.. our old one is 2012 DPM and has about 10TB of data that is backed up going back 30 days to HDD, over 30TB in physical size.. roughly 4 different raid6 arrays of sata II and III drives.. Im building a new box with the goal of 2016 in mind.. i guess the new one should reduce space and utilize storage spaces ideally? Info seems vague to me.. Do i still go about building a monster system (in size) with dedicated controller card / expander.. and in our case the usual 16-24 drive bays (3.5") (supermicro plus xeon single processor E5-2620 v4).. i was originally thinking of the sas 12gb with 7.2k drives.. roughly 6TB x 7 raid 6, with os mirrored with raid1 and 1TB.. I can build this setup for around $5500 vs alot more with a prefab dell system or even a refurb, fairly certain. How are failures handled with Storage Spaces.. i think you dont use raid on the sub level here right? So is it just the number of drives = the array size plus however many drives dedicated for failures (within storage spaces?) I read about dedup vs storage spaces and the modern system.. i really never understood what dedup did exactly, but assume with the refs and storage spaces, space is reduced anyway, compared to 2012.. I wasnt thinking of virtualizing any of this, not really sure the advantage anyway. Anyone gone through this and can offer some suggestions? Thanks in advance
