My bad- you were doing that anyway! I would certainly look at lease times and flushing the DNS then re-registering the station as suggested above. Works for us. Of course if you find that you do have multiple entries for the same name (i.e. more than one IP per name for some reason), the route to go would be reservations (as Tony suggested). In point of fact that may be the best route to go if you are having issues across the board with DHCP and DNS. Apologies.

Can't you use the NETBIOS name in the VNC viewer rather than the IP address?

The school is pants. They haven't locked down the laptops, they don't seem to *teach* anything. And by the statements made from the students I don't think they are using the technology properly (interactive boards, projectors, and capable teachers who can use them and get the class involved). Bottom line for me is that they didn't plan this at all. Stick X&Y chromosomes in front of a hormonal teenage lad and then put a laptop in his face with the ability to play Halo on it....it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the boys point.

I've been using it for about a week with no real issues. Haven't tried uninstalling it though...mmmm....maybe I won't. I don't like IE7- I mean, it's IE and all that but it seems clunky still. The only thing I do think is cool is the new view of tabs- I like that a lot (I know Opera kind of does this but not as sleek). Other than that, FF still holds the show on Windows for me.

..and there are some of us who feel we are don't know enough to be able to contribute to the general flow of things but who have small areas of knowledge/insight where they can add something to the discussion. I'll be honest here and say that as I scan some of the posts I'm left scratching my head as to what you're on about, but that's good because it gives a lot of us something to aim for, and leads to researching the subject - Wife to me on a Saturday evening, "are you working?" "no, it's research" "so it's work then?" You can't get much past them. here's to the next 300, beeswax I think you're right on there beeswax. I try not to post indiscriminate posts- but this darned place can be addictive. Not to say I can really contribute much though- I learn far more than I give out. Paul

I think you could do with some anger management techniques yourself! And patience. Lots of it. Things in the interoperability world between Windows and 'Nix (including OS X here) aren't as simple as you would want them to be. But it can and does work. At home I share (using SMB) between a local account on both Windows XP and Mac OS X; I can then use different accounts and log on to either my 2003 Server or OS X Tiger Server (form either OS). Was it easy to setup? Not really. Does it work though? Yes. It can be high maintenance- but if you bought your Mac so that you could network, you would have been better taking the school's offer of a Windows laptop to learn 2003 Server on. Would have saved you this stress ;-)

You obviously have to use the Connect to Server menu item and prefix the above with your protocol (i.e. SMB)

Put an account on our Mac that has the same username and password as the one you are using on your Windows machine. Use the correct short name. Then try using: smb://x.x.x.x/YOUR_SHARE_NAME Login using your account. I've seen this sometimes too when Windows is encrypting passwords. If the above doesn't work, let me know.

Tai Sabaki is very important. Angling. Footwork. All fundamental to a good martial skill. You should learn these to a functional level at an early stage in your martial arts--and properly. *Mastery* of those movements is a life-long process. Of course we call it "body evasion" technique. Taught from beginner onwards. And these movements have to be natural- no point in being inflexible and rigid. Especially in life-or-death situations where the weapon isn't a classical weapon like a bokken- but instead a kitchen knife or blade of some kind...that'll get ya cut up real bad. :-)

Have you updated the OS (System Preferences > Software Update)? X11 is on your installation disc- put the disc in and search for the package and just install from there. If that fails, download the version from the Apple website. I have always been able to get GAIM running easily after installing X11. :-)

It's looking very nice in places- though is it just me or does the Explorer window look too "cluttered"? I mean, I love the depth that I can go to using something like Konqueror in KDE as a file browser, but Windows Explorer has traditionally been a little less functional than other file system browsing mechanism--I wonder how long term Windows users will fare with the detail that seems to be there now? I can't think of any reason why you couldn't do this. WSUS just stores updates in a folder on your server if you have chosen that option. On the other hand, Volume Shadow Copy will make lots of read/write operations on your server- and if both your WSUS component and VS area are on the same volume, you might encounter some performance issues for sure. To be safe, I would test it out if you can (first) and then perhaps move your volume shadow area to a separate physical HDD or at the least a separate partition. In fact in this month's Technet magazine (p. 44) there is some advice about this and the author basically says that putting your shadow copy area on a separate disk would increase performance and not impact the rest of the system *because* of those read/write operations. At Kingswood we have a separate server with large storage for a similar thing and WSUS (just upgraded to it this week) on another (separate) server. HTH Paul
