Most whiteboards should be fine although many prefer to use a matte finish to prevent light reflection, and matte whiteboards tend to cost more than gloss as they are 'specialist' products designed for projection (not justifiably, I would say). If you are going with touch interactive projectors then please check manufacturer's specification as I know that ours require the bezel to be no more than 2mm - 3mm proud of the dry-wipe area, else it may interfere with the touch interactivity. I am sure Epson will have their own spec for their products. For the record I purchased a wide format matte whiteboard for our service centre to use with one of our products for under £180 and it works absolutely flawlessly. Bezel aside, any whiteboard should do (matte finish optional) so long as it is the same aspect ratio - the Epson models you mention are WXGA so will need a wide format (16:10) board.

Might be a faulty fan. Even if all the fans are spinning, one of them might be giving a false RPM reading to the main board and causing the unit to shut down. From a user-serviceable perspective, if you have tried using pressurised air to clean out the dust and checked that nothing is preventing the fans from spinning then there is not much else you can do other than send it to a service centre, I'm afraid.

I would just like to re-iterate what Adrian said above - that home cinema projectors will typically be less bright than their data counterparts and therefore unsuited to environments with ambient light such as classrooms. There are a few data 1080p projectors for around the £400 ex VAT mark so no need to take the home cinema route in my opinion.
