I am hoping there is a simple soultion to this that I am just somehow missing. In upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 Ultimate I no longer see how to configure the computer that is attached to the modem/router (which shares the internet connection with the rest of the network, etc.) so that a remote desktop connection is pointed past that computer to another desktop/a specific IP address within the network. In Windows XP there is a handy dialogue box that allows me to easily do this (see image below). In Windows 7 and beyond I cannot find where to input the IP address I want to connect to. When I log in remotely I can only log in to the desktop that acts as our file server, i.e. the one connected to the modem/router. Image below shows remote desktop firewall settings in Windows 7 and higher. In the advanced settings inbound/outbound rules there are more things I can tweak, but I still don't see where to input: Name or IP address of computer hosting this service on your network. Needing some expert Linux help on how to configure my Ubuntu 16.04 Linux desktop to allow a MS Windows Remote Desktop Connection through the firewall to connect to a windows machine in my network (behind the firewall). The Linux Ubuntu 16.04 machine is acting as a file server and is also the machine that is connected to the modem/router and sharing the internet connection with the rest of the network. What I want to do I think, is forward port 3389 on the Linux machine to point to the Windows machine that needs to be connected to remotely. Any help is appreciated. NOTE: I had no problem doing this when my file server was an older Windows computer running XP Professional as there was a dialogue box to point the remote desktop connection to the proper machine - now however on windows 7 and above I don't see how to do this and the AT&T router I am using doesn't make forwarding the port to an IP seem workable. So, I have moved on to Linux and decided to ask for direction before attempting to change the firewall settings. I *can* successfully connect to the windows machine from the Linux machine using Remmina Remote Desktop Client within the network. - Jim in Chicago -
