Having implemented a One School One LAN I had encrypted SIMS traffic from the rest of the network using IPSec. Before the database conversion I found the SQL port number by going to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Bin\SVRNETCN.EXE How dou find the current port number for SQL 2005 or should it remain the same?

I've been trying to get my head around deploying vista to a bank of laptops at our school. I've created an answer file using Windows System Image Manager and saved it to the c:\windows\system32\sysprep folder on the machine I have been testing on. however, when I run the command: sysprep /generalize /oobe /reboot /unattend:answerfile.xml I get an error saying: "Windows could not parse the or process unattend answer file [answerfile.xml] The specified file does not exist" I've have tried this in various location but to no joy.. has anyone else had any luck with this? I've just had this back off Sophos - might be useful to some of you According to the details you have provided, you are attempting to install the Enterprise Console on Windows 2003 64bit edition: unfortunately this is not a supported platform at the moment. The AntiVirus product is fully compatible with 64bit OS's however not the console. If you have a 32bit Windows 2000 or 2003 server please could you install the Enterprise Console to there? when the blue screen pops up with the error, it usually includes the effected driver; something.sys if you can find out this it should point you in the right direction. If the message pops up to fast, if you can get access into windows, get the System menu up from the control panel, select the advanced tab - start up and recovery - then un tick the box that says 'Automatically Restart" The blue screen with remain on until you physically reboot the machine giving you loads of time to get the driver information down.

Are all your teachers a member of a specific security group? If so try this as a start up script for the machines in question, more of a quick fix than a proper solution though NET localgroup Administrators /add "DOMAINNAME\Teachers"

would that be a windows patch or a sophos one?

I'm having problems installing Sophos on my new Admin server. each time I try running Sophos Enterprse Console.MSI I just get an annoying message back saying: "The wizard was interupted before Sophos Enterprise console could be completly installed" and event is written to the log with event ID 11708. Sophos hasn't back to me yet so I'm wondering if anyone else had had issues like this? I've fished about on the net but not had any joy yet.. here are my specs anyway if it helps Sophos Enterprise Manager v1.3 Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 R2 Dell Poweredge 1900 cheers Lee

Cheers for that.. I had been using the GUI method, but didn't realise it made changes to the registy. I've now got the hotfix from microsoft and it looks to have solved my problem.. best get the image tweaked now! cheers fellas

Thanks for that.. I've just had to ring Microsoft to obtain the hotfix, god knows why you cant just download it. I hope they got my email address right when they patched me through to India.. I haven't recieved the fix yet!

Ok here is my dilemma. (apologies for the lengthy description, I’ve tried to keep it as short as pos!) I've been preparing a new XP image to be deployed with ghost. I spend quite a lot of time tweaking the system so that the end user has a painfree experience as possible. To do this I create a local account on the machine, open up applications that cause problems when opened for the first time by a new user (e.g. Office 'installing' its self) Once I've finished getting that profile working properly I copy it over to the Default User directory. I then used to run Syspep on that workstation before taking an image of it for deployment. I had been using this method of a few years now, however now, when I run sysprep and logon onto the machine after it has finished, all the configuration of the Default User account has been lost. I can log in as a new user, open word and the annoying installation box pops up drastically increasing the time it takes a student to log on and start working, along with the 'Personalizing Desktop' on logon I don’t have proof but I'm inclined to think a Windows update at some point is causing this issue. I decided to have a play with mandatory profiles as there is no reason for the local profile to be changed or modified, all saved work is saved on a network drive. I did this by creating the profile on the same local machine as before then from the System menu, went to userprofiles and copied the profile to a network location. I then renamed ntuser.dat to ntuser.man. I created a test account to try this on and the account pulled down the mandatory profile with no problems... it didn't however pull down the GPOs! I ran gpresult to see if they had or had not been applied, and to my astonishment it said that the policies HAD been applied when clearly they hadn't. I could access C drive, control panel.. everything. I'm starting to run out of ideas, all I want is for staff and students to be able to log onto a workstation as quick as possible without windows trying to customise and install software each time an application is loaded for the first time. If the amount of time students spent waiting to log on and start working is added up over a year, it would equate to quite a considerable amount of time. Hello, I'm just wondering if anyone has had any joy configuring CNA on their network? There seems to be a myriad of information out there on successfully configuring your switches to work with CNA. eg, Do you need to give just one ethernet interface on a Switch an IP address, make sure SNMP and HTTP Server is enabled and will CDP then discover all the other (cisco) hardware on the network. Or, does configurations need to be made on all switches? cheers in advance
