Adding a $ hides the share from the server end. Depends on your NAS, on synology DSM you can change a share's settings to hide it, look for something similar on yours.

All you need is to hook it up via ethernet and set up Wake on LAN (WoL), there are lots of sites for this and only takes a few steps. I use an app called universal remote on my phone/tablet to wake and remotely control a number of PCs
