  1. We're using Profiles 7 - there are no problems using the "polished" features of MS Word to create a fantastic school and assessment report We even added the student photo to the front cover of the report last year ... and to see the faces of Year7 when those reports came out Although we thought we wouldn't embarass them this year!
  2. So do I install Microsft Virtual Machine with Server 03 file... I'm in two minds... to actually install Server straight on the HDD or to use VM and access it that way!! Would there be performance issues if I done it the VM way?
  3. Hi I want to install Virtual machine so that I can use Server 2003 SBS on it for home on XP. So basically, I've got a machine with XP Pro - I want to install virtual server so it can Server 03 SBS on it. However if I do this, will it act as a Domain, so that other machines can access resources on it or Not. Hope you understand what I'm trying to do. Thanks Kiran
  4. What report are you actually trying to print and from where?... we use Today's Register in the Attendance Module for the fire register every morning [although there has been a sorting problem recently - but sorted now].
  5. Awesome... Although I've always used HP Printers!!!

    DIY web pages

If you do go with MySQL/PHP then Joomla is extremley easy and powerful!
  7. Sorry to sound stupid but is it literally a "manual" book or a piece of software?
  8. Teachers use Lesson Register. Finance and Information Staff print out a report every morning after the first 10 minutes of a lesson so if there is an emergency evacuation those are used and handed out to tutors. We did use Bromcom before, and found it the fire drill module was very useful and this feature is one which I must admit SIMS is lacking to a certain extent. Basically Phil, with your PDA/Folder, you register your fire drill group [ususally this the tutor's, tutor group OR it can be a support tutor]. Every time Bromcom is syncd with the server when taking NORMAL class registers , the fire group register is also syncd so you have a rolling up-to-date register and fire drill register ready to use without a server which is burning in the building!!! @ICTSupport by the way what is Reg.Bok :?:
  9. I have had experience with cheap designed for home Wireless Access Points and there are not a good solution in a large school or even a small one for that matter. Although we haven't used industrial strength or blue socket or cisco WAP we have used Netgear PROSafe which I have found to be good value but also provide a decent amount of coverage and usability for many concurrent connections.
  10. I would use Outlook Web Access if you have exchange installed. It is a coherent structure to the outlook application and people like it!!
  11. Can you not just move to SIMS... it far better now
  12. Symantec AntiVirus coporate edition - works fine on Vista after downloading version 10.2!!
  13. You have to disable User Account Control - in control panel; user accounts; click on the user name and an option should be there! There might be a policy in GPO adm files for vista too ... but I haven't checked them out as yet!!
  14. I completely agree with Phil and Steve on this one. It’s good to know that Capita are testing the Feb Release properly so we don't have deal with many updates. We find SIMS does have the occasional go slow; but we have no major problems here. Teachers use SIMS every hour to Register kids and we haven't looked back since the eradication Bromcom!! We now use SIMS for Profiles, Assessment Manager and have been using SIMS for many years for Pupil data, Exams, Timetabling and Cover, and Options. We are now seeing our MIS tying up nicely with other modules... and its good to see teachers using SIMS to the fullest ... to improve, enhance and support teaching and learning which is what it is ultimately designed to do. The new interface is very innovative ... and I do feel better personally with a Windows Application User Interface rather than a Web Interface as these can be tedious for data entry. I hope this thread doesn't become a blast SIMS thread! :axe:
  15. I totally agree with you Grumbledook... the system in principle is fantastic..its just the recording and entering the data into their database that's the problem!! Thats why we want to move to SIMS, keeping the strategies of SLUETH in concept but just entering and storing the data in SIMS behaviour and achievement; I'm not sure that it'll work ... that's what I've got to see! I think the link with SIMS is just going to be an automatic report generator feeding the students into the system everyday IIRC!
  16. How much did Capita pay you for that post?! I want to know too!!!! :violent3: Capita paid me zilch!!!! As we have used SIMS from DOS to .Net it seems to have evolved so much and that is truly amazing in terms of Software Engineering. I know SIMS can be a pain sometimes but it seems to have working trouble free for some time now. We do have the occasionally blip, but every system surely does. It’s just amazing that I now see teacher’s using our SIMS as a one stop integrated solution for their teaching and learning – for eReg, Profiles, Assessment Manager and it all seems to be tying up together nicely (which gives you a warm glowing feeling inside :? ) to support and enhance teaching and learning which is what we are here, utimately to do. The .net report writer is also so much better than RepGenLite!!! Maybe I’m just passionate ... my next mission is to move SLUETH to SIMS.net.

Is the wallpaper a .bmp file?
  18. I would go for SIMS... personally because it does the job you need it to do and our LA supports it!! And we are very happy with it!!! SIMS is getting better every time a new release comes out... - I have found in experience a MIS on a web platform can be tedidious.
  19. I would delpoy Outlook on startup ... automatically using the switch ... "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\outlook.exe" /importprf T:\DefProfile\Office\PRF.PRF You can deploy it via startup logon script or put it in startup. Otherwise if you have redirected desktop and start menus replace the link target with that. Hope this helps... Kiran
  20. We used Bromcom for the past 4 years and have found it unrealible and very costly. We were really fed up and staff never bothed to use it towards the end as it just wouldn't work - the folders I mean; Bromcom support was poor. Over summer we got SIMS.net on very staff laptop, and now use the NEW Lesson Register and more recently the updated Alerts system on Sims.net. Our attendance clerk uses Lesson Monitor for the reports and teachers use Lesson Register v7 for taking registers and behaviour tracking, although we used SLUETH previously. We are really happy with SIMS, the updates have slowed down now as the program becomes stable and staff find it very good to use as they have a wealth of information about their classes and students. Most staff use the wireless network [esp PE]... which is fine most of the time... We are now making staff use Profiles and Assessment Manager 7!!! Overall support for SIMS is excellent and the cost are better than BROMCOM..
  21. We'll be running to so it provides staff with continous assessment data... Assessment is at the heart of the school's plans for improvement ...[and ofcourse OfSTED] so it's a must, although there won't any pressure to squeeze it in this year.
  22. Thanks for that...it clears things up on where we stand legally.
  23. That's Great Thanks
  24. It might be a permissions issue where the JPEG icons are stored? Is the webpage going to be used on the Desktop as Active Desktop or as a webpage that loads in an internet broswer at logon?
  25. Recruitment, brainwashing. And thats why my personal view is that there should be no religion in any school. Makes you wonder if LA's are under pressure to put forward good schools, so they won't all fail like a lot of the city acadamies have been. It's definitely that, as we're an inner-city specialist school [M&C], but the whole area is going to be regenerated - either they get the money through the Academies option or they can wait for 'Building Schools for Future' PFI way. I think the government wants to put the image that Academies are working - some probably do as the 'City Technology Colleges' [old name for academy but with little differences] are converting so they get more cash!!! Not Sure!! The whole name 'Academy' is labelled failing... but I'm more worried about what powers the sponsors have over the National Curriculum and the running of the school.
