There is nothing wrong with the device, its good. Just poorly executed. Not sure about the costs though, BBC has not actually said how much they had to invest in the device and everything that went with it. see here Micro Bit - questions and answers - BBC News It would have been great if they had said they would push these out on time, and for the next 5 years. That would have a been a long term strategy, and be better for school and expanding skills. I suspect this time next year, they'd be forgotten. These are my thoughts. I am relatively knew to education, but I have worked within the "public" sector before and seen projects start and then never implemented correctly. I am an old cynical IT Manager, after all.

I cannot agree more. A real shame. I suspect the marketing people ran the project and then they rang the developers as a last resort. When they found it did not work quite as they expected. (Hint: Battery issue!) Why did they not back the Raspberry Pi, I have no idea.

Yep. All those millions of BBC TV License money used for a one off project, that was not delivered on time. Very poor.

From what I understand (information from this forum and others) is that the MicroBits belong to this years 7. The schools were used to push out the devices. Next Years, year 7 will have to buy them £12. Hence, a few schools are not using them, as they cannot afford to purchase hundreds of these each year. I suspect teachers don't want to change there lesson plans to much to take into account the device. Its a once in a life time deal, unfortunately.

Hi, I received an email a few days before. They came from a company called, Philip Harris. They supply technical equipment to the education market. The MicroBits arrived about two days later. I do find it quite galling that the BBC are still drumming the drum and saying what a success it has been. When quite frankly, they've cocked up big time on the delivery of this project. Its built on good intensions and hearts, rather than a solid business case and a real need. They'd be better putting resources around scratch and raspberry pi. They have reinvented the wheel, but came back something that rather square. Although, after playing around with one, they are rather good. :-)

Hi We are looking at purchasing some Cloud books as an alternative to the traditional Dell Latitude Laptop trolley. The main issue we have is battery life, as they are used too frequently to get a sufficient charge, hence looking at these Cloudbooks. Obviously, we could have gone for a Chromebook. But we have some small amount of software that needs to be installed. They are mainly used for "research" (Browsing google) Has anyone gone down the cloud book route, and if so, what make. I have been looking at the Acer One Cloudbook 14", have purchased one and it appears to run ok. Was looking at the Dell equivalent, but they are now EOL and they will not sell the "consumer" version to schools. (they prefer I spent £350 on an Education Laptop with poor battery life) . I believe Lenovo and HP do something similar. What are all your thoughts. Rob

Yeah complete waste of license fee money. They'll all be put in a land fill this time next year. I suspect the idiot that came up with it, has been promoted! :-) Our ICT\Computing teachers have no interest in it. They all prefer the PC, as it does more.

Looks like some schools have had them through. No such look here in sunny Swindon. I have seen a large amount of rockin' horse s4@@, though. Seriously, though, is any school outside of London actually using these in their lessons. Considering we only have 8 weeks left until the summer, all the lesson plans have been completed. I wonder what the BBC were thinking, when the "committee" thought this idea through. I bet they wish they had just back the Raspberry Pi foundation. Idiots. Rob

Hi Out of interest has anyone actually seen these on mass? Have signed up and got 3 last month and nothing now. Was expecting them a few weeks ago. I am in the Swindon, wonder how the BBC are deciding who gets them first? To be honest not sure what we are going to do with them, the lessons have already been planned for the rest of the year. Hi, You have to use the same path if you want to use the exported registry key, if not. You could just export it and edit in notepad with correct paths. Also, I tend to export these as a good reminder of where all the shares lead to. Rob

Hi The easiest way to do it and best value is to use, Robocopy and then use RegEdit. If you go to the following key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares If you back this up on your old server and then install on the new one, you should see all your shares back. You need to do this after you have done the RoboCopy. RoboCopy instructions: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/cc733145.aspx If you plan to run it over a few days, you should get all the files. From what I can remember, if you run a full copy day 1 and then day 2 and 3, do a incremental on any changes. You are more than likely to catch those users that ignore the "Please do not log on" messages! There is another way and that is to use DFS, but its a bit of effort to do this. Cheers Rob
