You can monitor your network with Zenoss Core on the VMware image with VMware Player on Windows. It's open source (and free), and it can monitor your switches, routers, Linux/Unix and Windows servers natively and just about everything else on your network. You'll get availability and performance monitoring, as well as modeling your network and devices with the integrated CMDB. Plus it's all remote-monitoring (no agents) and there's a large and active community of users. I'm a bit biased, but it sounds like it does everything you'll need. It looks like it only does SNMP v1 and v2 and their own protocol called NXCP. My biased opinion is that it looks like a very young project that is putting an emphasis on supporting lots of databases and doing both remote and agent-based monitoring. Of course I would recommend Zenoss as an more capable alternative since it has all the features I saw on their site and does remote SNMP v1/v2c/v3, WMI and Perfmon, JMX and command-shell monitoring and has a several years of development and a large and active community behind it. Zenoss is also GPL and there is discounted pricing available for educational institutions if you require support and Enterprise features. Take it with a grain of salt since I'm the Zenoss Community Manager, but Zenoss is probably a very good fit for your needs. It runs on a centralized server (on Linux, other Unixes or VMware) and remotely monitors network devices and Unix and Windows servers. Linux syslog and Windows event logs are processed as well. Alerts are rolled up so that duplicates aren't sent without acknowledgment, and escalation and alerts to multiple admins are supported as well. Zenoss Core is GPL and supports everything you have listed. If you need support or some of the Enterprise features (mostly finer-grained monitoring and integration with commercial applications), educational licensing is available at reduced rates.
