Thanks but I need more help than that. I have never needed to use calcs either but as I am now all Windows 7 I am looking for help to learn what the H$%% they are talking about. I need as I said above a tutorial or article which explains ACLs.

Thanks for the tip about PowerShell. I do not really know where to start. I have looked at the icacls /? but honestly don't know what they are talking about. I need a dummy's guide sort of thing to get to grips with Access Control Lists. Is there a tutorial or an article on TechNet?

I have a local network of PCs. The machines run Windows 7. The main one, the biggest, runs Windows 7 Ult. and the others Prof. The main one has a number of Virtualbox machines running Windows, all but 1 are Windows 7, the one exception runs Windows 8.1. Now my problem. I have in the main machine taken a DriveSnapShot image of the C: drive. I have stored it in a share on a locally connected NAS (Netgear RND4000). I tried to access this share using the snapshot program in one of the other PCs to extract a couple of files without disturbing the main machine. I could access the image and viewed the contents in a mapped folder. When I came to extract the files I found that the folder was not accessible. 'Access is denied' The folder is shared in the main machine (it shows as an folder icon with a padlock superimposed in the mapped drive). I was advised that I may need to change the access permissions using CACLS. As this is replaced by ICACLS for Windows 7 I have been trying to understand what I am supposed to do. What access list am I changing?
