Internet Explorer 8 hanging ? ? ?
patshaw101 replied to jamin100's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We have exactly the same problem! And guess what - we're also in Birmingham. Same ISP perhaps? I don't have the problem in Firefox, and I can access internal resource when I turn off the proxy. Any ideas? We also have PCE 3.0.0.7 installed. -
Nadeem, It may be commercially sensitive information, so I wouldn't want to post costings here. I recommend you give the guys at Prodigy Learning a call. It costs a lot less than you might think!

I thought I'd re-ignite this thread. Our headteacher asked me to research the requirements for becoming an MS IT Academy, and the benefits. I had a meeting with Prodigy Learning - a UK partner for the MS IT Academy programe. Needless to say, the program looks very attractive. For a relatively low investment, there are all sorts of benefits, including inclusive site licenses of software (with usage restrictions/terms and conditions). I'm generally a Microsoft-sceptic, but I've got to admit the deal does look good for specialist schools. Before I take the discussions further with our headteacher, are there any MS IT Academies out there that could help me with a query? As part of the program, Microsoft permits you to deploy most Microsoft titles exclusing office as part of your small annual subscription fee. How have other MS IT Academies used these simingly free site licences. Microsoft is quite clear that the use of the software must be for development or research purposes, and for the purpose of delivering the IT Academies program. How have other schools intepretted this? Does this mean I can only use this software in 1x suite for the purpose of the MS IT academy program? How have you used the benefits? If we sign up, we obviously need to ensure we stay within the T&C's of the licensing conditions, but how far can I go? Does anyone have any other comments to make regarding the MS IT Academy program?

I wondered if any of the mature PCE users would mind posting what they use as thresholds for the alerts. We're starting out using PCE, and I'm getting alerts every minute of the day. I know that part of this is down to us needing to get a handle on blocking URL's and exempting URL's from scanning, but I don't know how our thresholds compare with other PCE users. I've got the violation check delay set to 60 seconds and our trial group alerts set as follows: Porn 5, Pred 1, Prof 5, Acro 10, Drugs 2, Suic 1, Racism 2, Net Sec 5. I want to get an idea of whether the above is normal compared with other schools, or if it's configured too sensitively, compared with other schools. I appreciate that the thresholds may be sensitive information for schools, but assistance would be appreicated to help me reduce the frequency of alerts as 90%+ of them are false positives. Thank you. -
[acs] Serco ePortal, external access and Fronter - your setup??

SSL is not an area of my expertise but a simple google search came up with http://www.instantssl.com (other suppliers of SSL certificates are available!). If you pay your local authority IT provider to support you, they may be able to provide you with advice for setting this sort of thing up, or even a free SSL certificate? -
Thanks to Axel for delivering our trial unit. I've had chance to test it out and it's the easiest way to get access to our TS server. We're currently testing the water when it comes to thin client so are testing AXEL's unit as well as trying out thinstation with some 5+ year old computers. One element I've tested is the performance of video (basic video streaming eg. youtube). On my thinstation PC's, the video viewing performance is much better than expected. However, performance was not so great on AXEL's unit. Probably down to the difference in Video RAM. Has anyone else had any experience of using the AXEL unit when viewing basic video streaming? How much Video RAM is on the AXEL M70 unit?

Thanks for response, but I didn't give you all the information you need (Sorry!). The code you gave me did not appear to work. Am I right in assuming that the code applies to the TinyMCE editor? I'm actually using the JCE Editor. Any similar code I can use for JCE Editor?

The Edugeek Joomla Package - absolutely genius! Keep up the good work. My school's development website is http://myweb.bgfl.org/hodgehgs. Just struggling with the JCE Editor Toolbar alignment. In the backend it displays left aligned - perfect. In the frontend it displays center aligned - not good (see attached jpg). I've skimmed the JCE Editor website's forum but with no luck. Any of you guys know what I need to change to get the toolbars left aligned in the front end? I'm guessing it's a stylesheet problem... For information, I use a customised css file, as per the edugeek joomla package instructions. Thank you!

Problem Windows clipboard produces huge uncompressed images!
patshaw101 replied to patshaw101's topic in Windows
Thanks for the link to the list of programs. I have tried some of them and they still allow large uncompressed bmp's to be pasted. Does anyone know of a specific program that can control the pasting so it pastes a compressed image or is it a Windows limitation? -
I wondered if anyone else experienced the same problem, or more importantly, had a solution to the following: Our students are routinely required to produce screenshot documentation of software/websites they've created and they are taught to use 'Print Screen' and Paste keys to get the job done. The trouble is, the images revert to the 24-bit screen resolulution so the word/powerpoint files end up being rediculously huge. We've tried using freeware screen capture programs but these require students to exercise good practise by importing JPG files - something teachers say they don't have time to do (don't get me started on that argument!). The free programs can quite happily control the printscreen key but don't touch the paste operation so students still end up pasting 24-bit images. Is there a program out there that can effectively take over the whole print screen and paste functions by pasting a compressed image rather than 24-bit BMP? I would gladly pay good money for this as it would positively impact disk space/backup capacity requirements. It seems that this is a Windows design fault from our Microsoft friends...

SIS 900 LAN and Group Policy = BAD COMBO! Help!
patshaw101 replied to CM786's topic in Wireless Networks
Incidentally, we had PXE boot compatibity issues as well with the SIS900. My supplier was able to get a BIOS firmware update that made the SIS900 PXE compliant. I'm at home at moment so couldn't give you specifics but I do know the motherboard is a foxconn. Respond if you want further details. I agree that the SIS900 isn't the best NIC in the world but if you can make it do PXE-boot, you might save some cash? -

No problem. In the nick of time for your summer break as well. Have a good one. -
SIS 900 LAN and Group Policy = BAD COMBO! Help!
patshaw101 replied to CM786's topic in Wireless Networks
We've had exactly the same problem with one of the Schools that I manage. Suites full of PC's with SIS900 NIC's and I couldn't get the KS3ICTPilot DPS to push out via Group Policy. Both Microsoft and SIS do drivers for SIS900. The solution for us was to change back to the earlier Microsoft driver rather than the SIS driver that installs by default. We had another problem that I couldn't figure if it was related or not - our DNS server showed orphaned SSID's rather than computer names in the security tab of DNS entries. So we ran ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns on the clients. This seemed to resolve our problem. Try the above. If it doesn't work - post details of event log errors - they may give hints to the source of your problem...
