Hi Folks. I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here but I'm really struggling with User Identity Mapping on a Windows NFS server. The Microsoft documentation is way out of date and I can't seem to find a clear guide on how to set this up. Here's my scenario: I have an Windows NFS server (2008 R2 - I know it's a test box just to see if I can get this working). I've set up the NFS share. I have a couple of iMacs that are joined to the same AD domain as the NFS server. I can login with my AD account (created a Mobile account on the Mac). If I type ID in a terminal window on the Mac I see all of my AD group memberships so I'm pretty confident that all is well with the Domain Join. I can mount the NFS share from the Mac - no problem. But I have only have Read Only access to the files. I have tried changing every setting I can find in NFS to get Read/Write access but nothing works. I have nailed it down to the fact that ownership and permissions of the files on the Windows NFS server do not correspsond to an account on the Mac and vice versa. I know this because if I open up the permissions on the files to give EVERYONE Write access, I can create new files and folders from the Mac. There's quite a bit of info on the web about seting up User Identity Mapping between Windows and Unix - either by using Active Directory or setting up an Identity mapping server. But I cannot, for the life of me, find any meaningful information about how you actually do this. I did find one post suggesting that I add the Unix (Mac) UID in to the UID Number attribute field for my account in AD. I tried this but it doesn't work. As I said, if i open up the permissions on the shared folder I can create folders and files from the Mac but those files and folders do not have a "Windows" owner when look at them on the server. Likewise, if I create a file or folder on the server, they appear as owned by "nobody" on the Mac and I can't edit them. Does anyone know how to actually get proper user mapping working between Unix and Windows? Many Thanks, Keith.

Thanks. So how have you done this with a DVD image? I just wanted to test the process on a couple of laptops. I mounted the Win10 image and ran setup but I never got the option to upgrade - it has just installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 and moved 7 installation to Windows.old. One post I found suggested this was the correct way to do an upgrade and not to boot from the DVD. ???

Hi All, Perhaps a stupid question but have you all been doing in-situ upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or fresh installations? I've been googling like mad trying to find out what steps people have been taking to migrate from Windows 7 Pro or Enterprise editions to get to Windows 10 but all the steps out there seem to be for Home editions using the Media Creation Tool. Is it actually possible to upgrade from 7 Pro/Ent to 10 Pro/Ent or do you have to do a fresh install. My understanding from the various Microsoft marketing streams was that the days of wipe and reload were gone and that Windows 10 could be installed as in-situ upgrade. Am I wrong?

Usually Windows caches the profile of the last user who logged on so that user can still login even if they are off the domain. Do you have a GPO that prevents profile caching ?

Hi All, Over the last few weeks, I've been seeing an increasing number of PCs in school exhibiting weird screen refresh issues in Office products. Here is an example:- I've tried uninstalling office and re-installing but that doesn't fix it. I've had to resort to completely rebuilding the PC. However, the problem seems to happening on more and more machines as the weeks go by. Has anyone else seen this or know what causes it? Thanks.

Yep. That seems to work. I deleted my reports from favorites and re-added them and that seems to fix things. Although I have now found other reports (not in my favorites) that give then same error. I will have to dig deeper ... but at least my reports are working now :-) Many Thanks.

Thanks for replying. Yes - file association is all good. csv files have an excel icon and open in Excel without any intervention. I have to apologise because I now realise that my initial post was slightly misleading. I have tested on another machine and this is the exact sequence of events when the report works:- My report is in my favorites on my Home Screen so I click the report from the favorites window. The "Enter parameter values" window opens so that I can select criteria for the report. I click OK SIMS Opens a "Preview Report Results" window showing the results of my report run I click the "Run" button in the Preview window Excel opens and prompts me to enable content Excel opens a print preview window which I close to reveal the underlying csv file. On my desktop PC. I get the error after the "Enter parameter values" window but before the "preview report results" window. So, it appears that SIMS is not even getting to the point of opening Excel. It's actually failing to open the report preview. ?? I'll have a go at running the report with CommandReporter to see if I can get my csv file that way. K.

Hi Folks, I will log this with Capita but just in case any of you have experienced this and know the fix? ... If I run a report from SIMS that is configured to open the data in CSV format, I always get this error:- Error: Cannot activate application I couldn't find any threads on Edugeek that discuss this problem, but I can't believe I'm the only person that has seen this! If I configure the report to export in some other format all is fine. So there seems to be some issue with SIMS launching Excel. I have tried opening excel first, I have fiddled around with the file block settings within the Trust Center options of Excel and I have even tried enabling all macros. Nothing seems to fix this. As far as I know, mine is the only PC in school that is exhibiting this problem and it has been like it for quite some time (so it's persisted over several SIMS updates). I've finally got fed up with it and I'm now decided to try and find a solution. Anyone seen this before? Thanks, Keith.

Hi EngTech, I tried the LED hack on one of my projectors. It definitely stops the motor from turning but I still can't get the lamp to come on. I still get the Red warning light at the end of the startup routine. "So I can only assume the LED that is being suggested has an in built resistor to suit the 12v output"... I'm not an electrical engineer so it's entirely possible that the LED I have used is not providing the required resistance. If you don't mind giving me a quick lesson on how to identify the electrical resistance of my LED, I can have another go

Hi Folks, I've only just stumbled across the existence of CommandReporter.exe so I'm a complete newbie when it comes to using this tool. I've called an existing report using commandreporter.exe with /PARAMDEF option to create the XML parameters file, but the resulting XML does not contain a parameter id. I've looked through several post on Edugeek showing examples of parameter files including scripts on how to dynamically build them. All of them have a unique parameter id string, but I can't figure out how any of you are getting this parameter id value. Can someone tell me what the parameter id is and how it gets generated? Hi, I've got three of these that have failed. I replaced two last week with new Hitachi CP-AX2505 (no moving doors on this one). However, I would like to use the old ED-A100/A110's as mobile units by mounting on a trolley so they can be wheeled in as an emergency replacements. My thinking was that because I won't be using them in ceiling mode, the failed door opening mechanism won't be a problem. I can just open it manually. However, the projector stills fails to startup - I've got three of them and all of them do the same thing. I can hear the motor trying to open the door (even though it is already open) but it seems liek the sensor is not notcing that the door is open and so the projector switches off an flashes red. How do you defeat this mechanism?

Hi All, I hope you don't mind me hijacking this post but it seems like a good place to post this question. I have 2 DCs; 1 Physical and 1 Virtual. Configuration is as follows:- - Both are DNS servers - The physical server is the DHCP server - All clients "know" about both DNS servers (Checked by running ipconfig on the clients and checked the 005 and 006 entries in the DHCP scope) - Both DCs are Global Catalogs (Checked in Active Directory Sites and Services) - The physical server has all the FSMO roles (checked by running netdom query fsmo) - The DCs are replicating properly - the most recent object changes made on the physical DC were also present on the virtual DC. At 4am on Monday, the physical DC went down with a hardware fault. I fully expected the virtual DC to handle all login requests ... but no!! Pretty much every desktop login attempt resulted in "there are no logon servers available". I ended up getting the physical server back online at midday by which time there were some very tense teachers. When everything had settled down, I ran DCDIAG on the virtual DC to see if there were any problems but all tests passed. I'm a bit stuck as to why the virtual DC did not respond to the logon requests. Can anyone spot what I am missing here? The only thing I didn't do was start the DHCP service on the Virtual DC, but I don't see why that would be needed as long as the desktops had a valid IP lease and both DNS servers configured.
