I've published a comprehensive guide to setting up a network based around a Synology NAS, suitable for use in a small primary school (for instance, a village school). The background is that a couple of years back a village school was looking to replace its rather ancient RM Store Box, which had finally packed up. Their ICT supplier proposed a relatively sophisticated Windows server solution costing £16,000; the school had a budget of £3,000. Not only could they not afford it, it was gross overkill and they had been quite happy with the functionality of the Store Box. The answer was a NAS-based solution based around a 'next generation' device such as the Synology DiskStation. One of the guides here is the latest iteration of that work.
