    All schools need to be aware of a recent safeguarding issue at a Leeds school due to the filtering being poor and allowing children to be able to communicate with adults and being sent obscene materials. This has been on the BBC website: BBC News - Primary school pupils sent 'obscene' messages on Movie Star Planet Schools need to be reviewing their web filtering controls and the providers as this is very concerning.

    It is interesting you say that David. Rumour is that it was actually Schools Broadband who at the last minute informed the school you were no longer able to provide them with a service. It is also apparent that you yourself visited the school in question as they were unahappy about Schools Broadband informing the school at the 11th hour that they could not provide a serivce!! Not good at all!!!

    I have heard this morning that some of the companies who signed up school on mass are now at the 11th hour turning schools away as they cannot provide the services that they signed schools up for. This is breach of contract and leaves schools high and dry.....

    spoken to ICT4Leeds about these services this morning. AVCO, SAP, FAB and Infobase are not and have never been LLN services. These are services provided by LCC Children's Services or corporate finance teams. LLN has traditionally been the secure route to access these services. Given the fact there is no longer LLN, LCC Children's Services are looking at ways of making Council services available securely for all those schools which have opted out of ICT4Leeds. Any schools who stay with ICT4Leeds will continue to access these services without the need for additional secure tokens. Hope this helps.

    We had the ICT4Leeds service installed at our school before Christmas. We have 1:1 contention on our line as there is no longer a single 700mb connection. Each school gets it own dedicated point to point link. The service has been fantastic so far and we have the ability to manage our own office 365 and Smoothwall.

    My Head informs me that the compensation LLN received was due to the fact Capita failed to deliver the Openhive learning platform project. This money was refunded to all schools who subscribed to the Learning platform. There was also some money given to ICT for the resource they put into managing Capita, which should have been a managed service. This money was to cover resource cost and at no point compensation for poor performance. Also, we have checked our schools contract and there are no compensation clauses in there. Having made a few comparisons between providers we have looked at going forward, again nobody seems to be offering any compensation for failure to deliver if the issues is down to a supplier as has been in the case with Capita.

    All companies have issues in one way or other and I cannot see any company who can claim they have no downtime or issues influenced by external factors such as suppliers . The proof will be in the pudding over the next 12 - 18 months in terms of how well schools services are delivered. On the main, commercial providers put profits before the interest of schools and the kids and I reallly don't see how 'cheap no frills' services are the way forward here. At the end of the day profits and maximising these is the aim of the game here! Let's not forget, the local authority provision is non for profit and fully accountable.

    Looking at the track record and the individuals running some of the companies offering services, I know we would not touch them with a barge pole!

    The Council 4 year deal is due to the fact that when procuring technology deals, it is often the case that short vterm deals are expensive from what I can gather. Also, given the fact it is a 4 year deal there is a guarantee that the Council will still be there and you can turn them. Shorter term contracts also mean, procurement year on year and sometimes does not offer value for money. Also the Public Services Network contract is a 4 year deal which is backed by the Cabinet Office and also fully supported by Children's Serivces.

    Fair point and thanks all for answering the queries. We as a school will decide in the next 2 weeks where we go for our ISP provision. However, it is clear that there is are masses of suppliers out there offering varying service from Enterprise level solutions to cheap no frills services. Also, there are mixed reviews on a number of suppliers on this forum and nobody seems to have a glowing service when things go wrong. The usual case appears to be with educational ISP is that they have a really good sales team and once things go wrong you have really poor backup and customer service.

    In essence though no matter what the credit rating of a company is, a Limited Company has no liability if they go bust and schools have no fallback.

    Any schools looking for a ISP provision need to carefully check what is available in the marketplace. There are a number of companies out there making all kinds of claims and in reality all they are doing is re-selling services from other large providers. Also if going with small Limited companies, please check the companies backgrounds and the background of the people running these companies. Schools need to ensure that they check what happens if a company goes bust and what fallback they have.
