The admin network doesn't have a server, it's just two machines on a different ip range.

It looks as though the easiest solution is to combine the networks into one and just use file permissions on the SIM's machine for security.

It's not through choice, we where given two ip address ranges from county LEA, on for the curriculum and one for the admin.

Hi, We're looking at putting in electronic registration in to the classrooms this september, problem is, how to do it. We've got two networks, curriculum and admin. The teachers laptops are on the Curriculum network and the electronic registration system is on the Admin Network. Our (small) physical network consists of a router through which we get broadband and two switches one at either side of the school. The switches aren't managed and are about five years old. I'm thinking of replacing the switches with managed lvl 3 switches (or getting in smaller ones to go along side the present ones just for the e registration) and setting up VLAN's to allow us to securely join the two networks. Is this the right way to go about it or am i barking up the wrong tree!!! lol Regards

This is more for the Primary School and what I have found useful. For support 1. Server Software!!! otherwise saving can be a real nightmare, try keeping track of 30 memory sticks!!! 2. Antivirus (I prefer Symantec) 3. WSUS 4. Group Policy 5. Active Directory 6. Software Deployment (SpecOps Deploy is good) 7. Ghost 8. A good email system 9. 10. Still thinking about 9 and 10 For the Classroom 1. As above for the same reason 2. Office 3. An email package that actually works without having to put in multiple passwords to login!!! 2Email is good, nice and simple and it works. Exchange if you're brave. Email Detectives is fun for the kids but can be a pain to keep track of pupil progress. 4. Control Technology Software, Lego NXT is good if you like playing with Lego (I do ) 5. Music software such as Compose World Junior 6. Typing software like English Type 7. Rm Maths and RM Snapshot (Preferrabaly accross the network) 8. Loads of Interactive stuff for the IWB like BBC Active 9. BeeBot software 10. A lot of 2Simple software is popular

Hi All, Appollogies if this post is in the wrong area, wasn't quiet sure where to post it. Our local LA has a Select Licensing agreement with Microsoft. Does any one know how we would go about getting licenses under this agreement? Can we purchase licenses from a distributor directly under this agreement or is it more involved than this? Ta

There are a lot of schools near me that buy in their NM / Technician and to be honest I don't see them going down the route of getting their own. Some of the HT's see IT as some kind of Demon that eats up their budget that, as far as they are concerned should be used for teaching resources.

One thing to remember (cos I didn't:doh:) is if you're installing SP3 (I think SP2 was the same as well) on a laptop it will fail unless you are plugged into the mains (that's the laptop plugged into the mains not you:rolleyes:).

Hi All, Each time a 'new' user logs on to one of our machines MS Office 2003 sets up for that user. Is ther any way to stop this? Thanks

I've been deploying SP3 via WSUS with mixed results. Its installed without problem on all our machines except for our newer RM Laptops! For some reason RM Mobile One Laptops just won't install SP3 via WSUS. Has anyone else had this problem and if so do they have a fix / work around?

This wasn't through the website, it was through the account manager. Don't get me wrong, I like RM, just in this case they were to expensive for what we could afford. If you can haggle them down then go for it.

New server 3 years support Licences etc. But yes, basically it was 15K just to get one cc3 server and get our network connected to it!!!!

Hi We had this same problem last year, I got a quote for a new CC3 server. I got quoted about 15k which for a small village primary school was just to expensive. In the end I went for HP servers and installed windows 2003 myself with the help from sites like this and technet (it was a lot cheaper). One thing I would be interested in looking at if I was to do this again is 'Learning Network Manager' from microsoft, designed specifically for schools etc and it is free (your still need your licences for server etc). It looks as though it gives you the bells and whistles that allow you to easily manager school users and workstations etc. As far as laptops/desktops are concerned I think I will probably stick with RM, the quality is good and the support is excellent. (It's always good to keep checking companies like HP and Dell to see what they offer and compare against what RM is offering. NEVER get anything without a 3 year warrenty especially laptops, its just not value for money). Regards Maximus

Hi GP seems to be applying the settings now, however some of the PC's are having problems with IE7. When you go in to IE7 it hangs, it seems that one or more of the addons is causing it problems. Does anyone know how to disable particular addons for every user? Regards Maximus

Hi All, Appologies if this has been delt with anywhere else but i've been having real problems with this and there seems little or nothing about it on the net. I had Internet access controlled by a policy which set all of the proxy settings and home pages etc. Everything worked fine until the machines were upgraded to IE7. Can someone tell me how to make these settings in GP work for IE7? Many Thanks Maximus

One thing it does seem to cause is constant logging of the following of event ID 3019 MrxSmb. I changed it to the ip addresses of the server and the warnings stopped. Any ideas? Regards Maximus

Hi, I've used a startup script to map network drives, however when a user logs in the drives are displayed as diconnected even though you can browse through them. Any Ideas? Regards Maximus
