  1. Hi All, so, I am in the process of learning Powershell, and my first real project was to build a startup script responsible for mapping network drives. what i did yesterday, then today(version 1.5) i added more functionality to map network drives depending upon what AD group the user is part of. and here it is! startup_1.5.ps1.zip USE'S: --------------------- Whatever you want! lol... rip it apart, use it entirly, I don't mind! Although if you do any form of bug fixing, or have any feedback/advice then please post it here! As i mentioned, im still learning. so need feedback! INSTRUCTIONS: If you open the file up(i recommend opening it in notepad++, windows notepad doesn't seem to appricate the tab "lining up") for editing you will find an array at the top that looks a little like: $drivelist = ('authenticated users', 'G:', '\\server\projects'), ('group1', 'Z:', '\\server\tsweb'), ('accounts', 'Y:', '\\server\tsweb') the format is: ('GroupName', 'DriveLetter', 'UncPath') GroupName is the name of the AD group the user must be a member of for that drive to be mapped (using "authenticated users" or "domain users" will result in the drive being mapped for everyone, good for common drives!!) DriveLetter is the drive letter you want mapped drive to be set as! UncPath is the path to the server (EG: \\server\share\folder\subfolder\etc) The script removes all the network drives(only the drives that appear in the array! so if a user has manually mapped a drive, this will not effect it!) and then simply re-add's them all again! This is a screenshot of the script being run, normally though it should just exit without seeing any of this: the output is mearly there incase you want to manually run the script, or pipe it to a txt file or somthing... Enjoy! just to cover my arse: Although my code doesn't contain anything malicious I offer this "as is" and can not be held responsible for any loss of data, profits, life or consumable goods such as cookies, doughnuts or Coke Cola. IE. run it in a sandbox enviroment first! don't just throw it on all users startup! Tom

    Mac Mail Crashing.

Hi All, Hopefully someone can help? Iv got a Mac running V10.6.8 with Mac Mail V4.5 The User is downloading their mail from Microsoft's Hosted Exchange service(BPOS) It runs for about 3-4 Mins, and then will just crash and burn(mac mail dies) the same also seems to be happening with mac contacts, but Ical seems to be ok..... Hope someone can help, iv read that uninstalling mac mail and reinstalling is a pain in the arse! sorry about the lack of info... Im a windows guy! the crash log is as follows: Process: Mail [791] Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail Identifier: com.apple.mail Version: 4.5 (1084) Build Info: Mail-10840000~1 Code Type: X86-64 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [116] Date/Time: 2011-10-18 16:10:18.673 +0100 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) Report Version: 6 Interval Since Last Report: 123547 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 72 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 98319 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 47 Anonymous UUID: 3548BC51-5C2C-4222-8D0F-5EB18F6D0423 Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 10 Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.default-priority Model: MacBookPro6,2, BootROM MBP61.0057.B0C, 2 processors, Intel Core i7, 2.66 GHz, 4 GB, SMC 1.58f16 Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, PCIe, 512 MB Graphics: Intel HD Graphics, Intel HD Graphics, Built-In, 288 MB Memory Module: global_name AirPort: spairport_wireless_card_type_airport_extreme (0x14E4, 0x93), Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.42.4) Bluetooth: Version 2.4.5f3, 2 service, 19 devices, 1 incoming serial ports Network Service: AirPort, AirPort, en1 Network Service: iPhone USB, Ethernet, en2 Serial ATA Device: Hitachi HTS545050B9SA02, 465.76 GB Serial ATA Device: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 USB Device: Hub, 0x0424 (SMSC), 0x2514, 0xfa100000 / 2 USB Device: Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad, 0x05ac (Apple Inc.), 0x0236, 0xfa120000 / 5 USB Device: BRCM2070 Hub, 0x0a5c (Broadcom Corp.), 0x4500, 0xfa110000 / 4 USB Device: Bluetooth USB Host Controller, 0x05ac (Apple Inc.), 0x8218, 0xfa113000 / 6 USB Device: Internal Memory Card Reader, 0x05ac (Apple Inc.), 0x8403, 0xfa130000 / 3 USB Device: Hub, 0x0424 (SMSC), 0x2514, 0xfd100000 / 2 USB Device: iPhone, 0x05ac (Apple Inc.), 0x1297, 0xfd130000 / 5 USB Device: IR Receiver, 0x05ac (Apple Inc.), 0x8242, 0xfd120000 / 4 USB Device: Built-in iSight, 0x05ac (Apple Inc.), 0x8507, 0xfd110000 / 3
  3. gahh. not a viable option then.. i don't mind taking a slight pay drop, but i can't take that kind of pay drop.. got 2 kids to feed! lol.. cheers guys! Tom.
  4. so, as a rough estimate(im not asking for exact figures) what do you think a pro-rata wage on 16,000 will for 15 hours? not enough to sustain a drop from £18,000(my current wage) I'm presuming....
  5. also, on the pay scale sheet it says "SCP" as a column, what is the definition of "SCP"? Tom.
  6. Network Manager Technicians at Knebworth School , Knebworth - teachinherts.com, Hertfordshire County Council's teacher recruitment web site. The pay scale is H3, what iv looked up on: hertsdirect.org Pay Scales for Support Staff in Schools and the spreadsheet says: £15,725 -> £16,830 but, the job is advertised at 15 hours part time... is this wage correct for part time workers!? additionally, if it is part time, how is it viewed if i was to-do other work(maybe private Computer repair), or is it frowned upon? Tom.
  7. ahhh, i dunno, it cant be that bad can it?? I hear alot of you guys get roped into the sound and lighting for stuff like Xmas performances? iv got a bit of experience in that also! lol(did some amateur theater tech work for a while) the whole idea of an IT job in a school is very exciting, i just hope something becomes available and im the right kind of candidate. PS.. iv also passed about 4-5 different CRB checks, one for the NHS most recently. Tom.
  8. iv been looking into this(mainly because im intrested in how minecraft was developed and dream of making my own 3d game) i come across this: Minetest-c55 - Download its not minecraft, but its bloody close, it has the ablity to connect onto a central server and play multiplayer.. Have a look!? im playing it now on my lunch break lol.
  9. keep us updated on how it all turns out. iv been on the Minecraft bandwagon since the alpha stage(where it cost me something like £8 and iv got lifetime updates) although i haven't played it in a while.. Tom.
  10. Subscribed, Thanks, didn't know i could do that! Subscribed lol, very interesting post! Thanks for the heads up, i will make sure i do that Think i sent across the wrong impression... in my last job(the IT support for sales company one) i knew the system inside out, i knew that if the application server starts before the SQL server, it threw a hissy fit because it couldn't find the DB on start up(i didn't code the application! lol) over the 2 years i was there, i installed, managed and "grew one" with the network. and that improved my ability to support it, if i installed a switch a week ago and john smith was having network problems all week, that's the first thing i thought of! But with 30-40 customers, you just cant get to know the network as well as i can with working on one sole system.. additionally, allot of our work is remote support, and although agreed i can provide a decent level of support, its not the same as "running about all day long without having the chance to sit down"(infact, i currently do the opposite, where im sat down too much! lol) Thanks James
  11. a search for "mojang.com contact details" on google returned: Notch! with the email address: [email protected] additionally, a domain Whois on minecraft.net returned the email address: [email protected] (Markus == Notch) don't know how well that will get through(i suspect he gets alot of emails) but worth a try? Tom
  12. Hi All, I think it best to pretty much re-introduce myself, Iv been a member here for a while, but not been active much recently.(although i did still do the silent reading!) I'm Tom, 24, Working in IT for the past 4-5 years, living in Hitchin Hertfordshire, little bit of career background: started as a hardware engineer fixing the PC's that run the gaming machines in pubs(if one ate your money, don't blame me! ) then moved into the IT department for an electronics sales company(i miss managing just 1 network/system!) but lost my job due to redundancy due to a "not to bad" redundancy pay out, i used my time(2-3 months) off as paternity for the birth of my son(now 9 months old bless him ) after money started getting short i managed to secure myself a temp position on the IT helpdesk for the NHS Trust(the people who provide the IT for doctor surgery's) and in April this year, moved into a little(4 people) IT support outsourcing company 15 mins walk from home where we provide IT for small business's.. but at the beginning of all of that, i did some voluntary IT work at a school my mum used to work at, and i cant seem to drop the dream/desire to work in education IT again... As i mentioned i miss managing 1 network, we currently provide support for 30-40 customers, and i never get time to sit down in between the support calls and actually do maintenance/improvements/research into expansion... recently iv decided that i want to make a VERY active push into a securing a position in education IT(that i believe my heart lies in) and was hoping you guys could help me with a couple of things? 1)some advice on the best places to look for jobs in education IT, and any tips for research into technology in schools what would be useful me knowing for interviews? 2)as mentioned, I'm from Hertfordshire, so anyone in the local area, would be good to make contact with! but most of all, if anyone hears anything in my area coming available, think about me and let me know? I'm deep within the IT industry at the moment, with qualifications in MSDST, A+ and networking + and experience in server 2003/2008,exchange/windows XP/7, hyper V + VMWare... i think i would make a good addition to an IT team. Many thanks for reading! i hope you can help me fulfill my dream!(sounds so cheesy! ) Tom! PS, updating my CV at present(will be done this week) and am happy to provide it for anyone who needs/wants/wants a nose!
  13. Hi All! Long time no see/speak (im starting to get the IT Drowning feeling lol) now im here to try and bounce some advice/see past experiences in regards to a "blanket" wireless network, we are installing.. its going into a warehouse, and is going to consist of 8 "light"(netgear) access points(APs) with a smart controller stuck in the middle of them all! all the AP's are POE(power over ethernet) so i don't have to worry about that, but iv run into an idea, while reading the spec sheets of one of the AP's... it mentioned about installing them above a drop down ceiling(suspended tile ceiling)... what works in my favor, because i won't have to put my DIY tool belt on to fit these AP's to the walls! has anyone ever delt with AP's in the drop down ceiling? or does anyone know of any problems that could be caused/run into when installing them up there? if you havn't cault on yet, im responsible for the installation(would of loved to contracted it out! but got to keep it low cost!) also, while im on the subject, does anyone know any trial(with few limitations) or free/opensource wireless servey software i am able to run to check for black spots, etc? many thanks! Tom Kirby.
  14. wow... long time no post! saw this, and thought ":O.. i can help here" this is my icon resource: Free icons | Search through more than 100,000 icons | <--my first stop before i look ANYWHERE else! if you click the icon you can get a download link that leads to a nice transparent BG PNG file and it also informs about licencing(thats normally GPL) all the others i have are pretty much links from blogs i have on my RSS... after a small search iv found the following: Fresh Free High-Quality Icon Sets Smashing Magazine WooFunction: 178 Amazing Web Design Icons|WooThemes Freebie Release: Quartz Icon Set Smashing Magazine 80 Refined Social Networking Icons For Free | Web Resources | WebAppers 512 Pixel LED Icon Set 1300+ Free And Quality PNG Icons <--this one has 1300 icons, containing pretty much EVERY icon you will ever need! hope that helps?
  15. once again, i plug my good friend(who i don't know, but he sounds like a really nice bloke!) PHP Video Tutorials - Like to watch the video instead of reading the book? yes, he offers paid videos, but i learnt the majority of my stuff from his free videos(the old ones i prefer over the new!) have a look, its free, and if your anything like me, video tutorials are for learning, written tutorials are for CnP'ing hehe.
  16. i beleve the fire prevention system is tied into the power grid(my managers father had to restore power after saving the bloke) so fire alarm goes. servers go to UPS power, and after that. i don't know... maybe their not set to auto shutdown or somthing?
  17. really umbrella corp stuff though isn't it? hehe this company is MASSIVE, its got a 90 inch(yeh. it is that big. not a typo) plasma screen on the wall displaying server stats, its got wireless monitors in all the lifts, displaying financial infomation. and a it director who likes smoking in the server room! he he
  18. Hello all, first off. Long time no see! Was just chatting to my manager, whose father is a aircon/climate control specialist. He was on site doing some work at "BDO Stoy Hayward" what he tells me is a massive financial corp. So the IT Director is sitting there at a terminal in their server room. so stressed because of the financial problems at the moment(all that data passing in and out) he lights up a ciggy at his desk! As the smoke rises, and breaks the laser beams on the ceiling (what is designed to detect smoke) the alarms go off, he rush's to shut down all the servers. The isolation doors on the room close, and the fire prevention systems start pumping oxygen depleting gas into the room (no oxygen, no fire) to late for the bloke to get out in time! By this time, my manager’s dad had run down. Trying to save the blokes life. He tries to open the isolation door, because the room has pressurized, he couldn’t get it open! So his had to smash the door to pull the bloke out (by now he had stopped breathing) The ambulance come, and saved his life, but obviously his job was not saved! The servers had gone down for 27 mins! As you all know, a server going down for a min during a reboot is bad enough, let alone 27 mins! Only thing I could say to my manager was. “Is this place umbrella corporation”
  19. wellll. this is weird!!! i have just been building an application for work that does this... you will need to add: Imports System.IO then this is how iv done mine.. Dim alldrives() As DriveInfo = DriveInfo.GetDrives 'setting up the main function for getting drive infomation Dim a_total = Format(alldrives(10).TotalSize / 1024 / 1024 / 1024, "#0.0") Dim a_freespace = Format(alldrives(10).TotalFreeSpace / 1024 / 1024 / 1024, "#0.0") Label6.Text = a_total & " GB" 'total HDD Size Label5.Text = a_freespace & " GB" 'Free space 'A nice progress bar! ProgressBar1.Maximum = a_total ProgressBar1.Minimum = 0 ProgressBar1.Value = a_freespace the progress bar is set up how i like it, but you might want it diffrent.. let me explain.. lets use an example HDD size of 100GB and 80GB free if you have ProgressBar1.Value set as: ProgressBar1.Value = a_freespace It will fill the progress bar 80% but. if you have: ProgressBar1.Value = a_total - a_freespace it will fill the progress bar with used amount. so will only fill it 20% OOOO! i forgot! you change what drive you are getting the infomation from with: from: alldrives(NUMBER HERE) it takes a bit of playing about. but i found out, if you step through it. (and then over it, so its loaded the infomation into that VAR) then you can hover over the where alldrive() is defined and it will give you a list of drives and there ID number.. any more problems. give me a shout.. but thats what i use. and it works niceely
  20. Ok. After talking to her more, it seems that the "special cable" is just "talk" between the students. but she has said that her phone gets taken from her for no reason what so ever, and that new messages are showing as "read".... im not happy about this, and I’m going to be tightening up security on her phone(a timeout of 5 mins, locking full use until a pin is put in, on the phone(not the sim, otherwise a change of sim will override this security..) ) as for the "special Cable" that is capable of reading phones memory by passing the phones security, I know that there is software capable of doing it. And am not happy that it could possibly be used without anyone knowing...
  21. Hi. I have just been told by my 14 year old sister. That the child protection teacher.(just a normal teach, but with other responsibilities) has "a special cable" that can access content on students mobile phones if he believes its a child protection issue... Thing I’m asking is... this phone is actually owned by myself (my contract, my sister using it) so he therefore (I would of thought) needed to ask myself, before accessing any content! Obviously there are cables and software packages out there, that the police use to access content to use as evidence in a court of law... but this is quite a legal issue.... i would of though, the teacher would need a warrant to access any content.... It just doesn't sound right. is this just a hollow threat. Or should I be looking into this further? Just to clear things up.. there has been photos put on facebook and myspace that the teachers have been made aware of, of a house party with alcohol available...(what brings another thing to mind... what is the law for drinking at home. under the supervision of a responsible adult(one of the Childs mums) ) i thought id ask for advice, because this sound to me, like a gray area!
  22. we use Hardware VPN's to connect to our US site, and Scotland (from hertfordshire) you can pick up hardware VPN's quite cheaply, and we have never had any issues with ours! software VPN's are ok, but only really designed for laptop users connecting while on external trips, etc... We use FortiNet hardware, its rated about the same as cisco..

  24. Hi. We are currently building our domain controller. But we are missing the OU titled "member Servers" Is this a default OU that should be created when the server is made into a domain controller? Or... 1) Do we need to create it? 2) is it created manually?
  25. no. im running the application locally. its checking file infomation on a network file..
