Hey, that's me! Yup, I performed an upgrade from Zimbra 6.0.4 Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit physical to Zimbra 8.0.6 Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit in February half term. I say upgrade, it was a series of upgrades across a series of different virtual machines. - Zimbra 6.0.4 Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit physical to Zimbra 6.0.4 Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit virtual (p2v) - Zimbra 6.0.4 Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit virtual to Zimbra 7.2.6 Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit virtual (upgrade in-place) - Zimbra 7.2.6 Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit virtual to Zimbra 7.2.6 Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit virtual (data to new vm) then the fun starts with converting to 64-bit Zimbra 7.2.6 Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit virtual to Zimbra 7.2.6 Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit virtual (data to new vm plus 64-bit conversion) Zimbra 7.2.6 Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit virtual to Zimbra 8.0.6 Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit virtual (upgrade in-place) Zimbra 8.0.6 Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit virtual to Zimbra 8.0.6 Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit virtual (data to new vm) Clearly a lot more steps than you might need to perform as you're already at 7.2.x - and I might have been able to do the job with fewer steps - but it meant I had lots of places to roll back to. Upgrading Ubuntu in-place was a nightmare, trying to find appropriate repositories and such, so it was actually a lot easier to complete the task by building a new VM with the appropriate OS, copy the data across. The information in the Zimbra Wiki is really good - especially for the migration from 32bit to 64bit (you didn't say which you're running), so I would spend some time reading that carefully if you need to perform this upgrade. Apart from that, the process is basically to create your VM, install Zimbra with the -s option, to install Zimbra without setting anything up, move /opt/zimbra out of the way then rsync /opt/zimbra from your old VM to /opt/zimbra on your new one, run zmfixperms to set the permissions, re-run the installer, it will pick up that there's already an installation in place, and continue to repair the installation. DM me if you'd like any more hints, but that stuff with the information on the Zimbra forums should help!

We are considering tablets for students to use, and regardless of what platform we use, our concern is the charging of such devices and the prevention of damage by over enthusiastic students plugging charging leads in...plus how are you getting on with damaged screens? How are such devices faring in your establishments? …or do you have a pile of broken ones in your office/workshop?! We have some ideas but wonder if you guys could share their experiences of such situations, and any other feedback would be welcomed! Many thanks, Tom

Which aspect of Frog are you hoping to recreate? If it's the education side of things, get Frog or Moodle and do it properly. If you're looking for the "in-context editing" stuff, then might I suggest Concrete5 - concrete5 - Free CMS | Open Source Content Management System - it's a piece of cake to come up with your own themes/templates, and it's a doddle to use...imo

Antonio, I must apologise again for my slow reply! Yes the workstations are configured as the KB article suggests...however when accessing http://swscan.apple.com and all the other listed URLs I just get given a 404 not found error...? So how come each workstation and the server gets a list of updates if you manually run sw update?! I will endeavour to getting around to a speedier reply this time! Cheers

Hi Antonio, Sorry for the delayed reply, again! Haven't been anywhere near the Firewall service. Yes clients can update OK away from using our own update server, and the server even lists a load of updates, they just don't get put into the list of available updates on the Software Update server :-/ Re drive/directory structure being unhappy...is there anything you can suggest? Disk utility's repair permissions thing maybe? Tom.

Sorry to thread-hijack, but seems like a sensible place to put this... Has anyone got any info on PaperCut vs PCounter? Anyone had experience of both? Which one seems best? PaperCut certainly seems to have more features listed on their site, but does anyone have any hands-on experience?

Hi guys, Having a problem getting Software Update Server going on our Mac Mini server. The service is started, configured to copy all updates from Apple, and to automatically enable copied updates. Configured to provide updates on the standard port 8088. But nothing happens. The only thing I get in the Service log is the following: Fri Jan 14 09:35:21 swupd_syncd[78081] : Unable to download or create .smd file for product zzzz061-9823. Fri Jan 14 09:35:21 swupd_syncd[78081] : Product zzzz061-9823 will not be available for installation. Fri Jan 14 09:40:23 swupd_syncd[78081] : Unable to download or create .smd file for product 061-4612. Fri Jan 14 09:40:23 swupd_syncd[78081] : Product 061-4612 will not be available for installation. Fri Jan 14 10:02:54 swupd_syncd[78081] : Unable to download or create .smd file for product 061-7365. Fri Jan 14 10:02:54 swupd_syncd[78081] : Product 061-7365 will not be available for installation. So nothing's actually getting downloaded. But also when you point a client to the server, it says that the server isn't even there, and I get the following in the Error log: [Fri Jan 14 09:26:57 2011] [error] [client ip.add.re.ss] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /var/db/swupd/html/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog And finally when accessing the server via a web browser it just times out and I get the following in the Error log: [Fri Jan 14 10:22:03 2011] [error] [client ip.add.re.ss] Attempt to serve directory: /var/db/swupd/html/ Any suggestions at all?! Any pointers most welcome!

We had a very similar situation with our Mac Mini server - turned out to be the permissions of the drive?! Get into single user mode (Cmd + S on startup), mount your boot drive, chmod to 775, restart the device, job done. No data lost, just restarted as normal. Very weird. Might be of use?

Doesn't appear so. I ended up finding as many drivers as I could and installing them onto my 'imaging' machine before sending out the netinstall image. It's a bit clunky as you'll obviously end up with drivers you don't need in the images, but it's the simplest thing to do without buying Apple Remote Desktop!

Agreed - trying to persuade my boss to let me BootCamp them all with XP. The only thing the ACTUALLY need to do on the Mac is iMovie. I think you'll find that you can now get Photoshop and Office for PCs, too!!

WGM is picking up their home folder from AD, so it is mapping the home to smb://server.domain.internal/usernameshare$/ for example - do I have to create a share on server.domain.internal called '.TemporaryItems' or do I have to create a .TemporaryItems folder in every single user's home directory?

Seems to make sense. How on earth would I go about doing that? I've found the stuff about adding in the ManagedApp stuff to WGM to modify/create symbolic links but I'm afraid I'm a little bit stumped from this point. How can I tell it to use the network home path apart from using smb://server01/username$ - this obviously needs to pull the network home from AD, I don't want to hard-code for each user or indeed use 'smb://server01/%@$/' to map the directory as our users are spread across four servers.. Any suggestions? Apologies if my rambling makes no sense...!

Syncing? Very odd - it should literally just point the home directory to the network share in the same way as changing the target of My Docs in XP to a network share. Have you got Mobility features enabled in the machine/user preferences? (or, indeed, is that what you're trying to achieve?)

@Edwardjr - On the mac client, in System Prefs > Accounts > Login Options > Network Account Server > Directory Utility > Edit Active Directory > Advanced Options (phew!) - uncheck the "Force local home directory on startup disk" checkbox. This worked for me in my thread, it just points the home directory to the network home folder share as specified in AD. For example, user 'student3' logs on, he will see "student3$" listed next to the house icon (indicating his home folder). "Use UNC path from AD to derive network home location" should also be checked, and make sure you use smb. As Carter previously noted, this could increase network traffic if your users are working with big chunky movie and photo files, but as far as I can tell it works in exactly the same way as redirecting My Docs to a share. Might be handy as an aside, again on the Directory Utility under Administrative, check "Allow administration by" and then add in some Windows groups (e.g. Domain Admins) so you don't have to set up an entire OD group just for your admins/techs. Obviously you can image your client just after this, but before binding to the domain, so you won't have to do this for every client. HTH!

Hi, me again. Posting on here again so I'm not accused of cluttering up the forum! Kind of related to home drives, as far as I can work out anyway. We have Office 2004 for Mac installed on our clients (test clients until the new image is rolled out everywhere). I cannot get my head around why this is, but some users are unable to save work to their home drives from any Office application. Saving from the OS, from iLife and from Adobe CS4 applications is fine. But if you try and save from Office 2004 apps, it says that the drive is either full or there's a permissions problem... Well there isn't. That user has read/write access to his user area and as proved with other applications, saving is fine. Some posts online have said that there needs to be some folders in place before you can save (.Trash, .TemporaryItems for example) but I cannot see any reason why a user would not have permissions to create such folders if they were required. I temporarily allowed student and staff users access to run Console, but I could not see any useful entries whatsoever. For info - OS X 10.6 SL clients with OS X 10.6 SL server, bound to CC3 Active Directory domain, home drives automatically mapped to user share (smb://server01.school.internal/username$/) Any clues welcomed! D'oh. I am a fool. I installed the optional 1.7GB of printer drivers onto the mac and it all works perfectly now I'm new to all this Mac stuff! Thanks for the pointers Carter

Not entirely sure if this is of use to anyone else, but I have made it work by un-checking "Force local home directory on startup disk" in the advanced options of the Directory Utility and that seems to do the trick.

Thanks Carter. Come to think of it now, once on the server it prompted me to connect to apple software update to download the drivers for this printer (HP Color LaserJet 3600n). At no point whatsoever have I been able to recreate this on the clients. I have scoured the HP website but it just takes me to a page informing me that the drivers for this printer are bundled in with OS X...but they are clearly not, the closest match I have is a CLJ 3000 or a CLJ 3700 - clearly not right. So am I right in thinking that printing with the Macs does not work in the same way as a Windows server, i.e. your workstation prints to the server and it then connects to the printer, the WGM simply says 'here use this printer' and it's still up to the client to work out print drivers? Any more clues welcomed!

Hi there, As we (hopefully) all know, when your OS X client is joined to AD it will automatically map the user's home drive, usually on the dock. This is great and works just fine, but the 'local' user home drive is also available. And as OS X will default to the local home drive when attempting to save work, we are going to end up with work saved on the Macs and not onto the home drives. So, I'm wondering, is there a way to have the OS X home drive redirected to a network share? Just in the same way that you can right-click My Documents and change the target location, can the same be done with OS X? Any suggestions would be handy, even if it's "duuh- it's under bla in WGM". Hi there, Problem with setting up our new Mac OS X 10.6 SL server and OS X 10.6 clients I have given up all hope of getting the server to talk to one of our printers over IP, so looked at Bonjour. This works a treat from the server, I can print with TextEdit just fine. Sending that printer out to the clients with WGM, the printer appears as available just fine, but when attempting to print it produces one page with two lines of what looks like PCL script followed by 8 or 9 blank pages. Has anyone else had anything like this, or any suggestions to make? Would be most appreciated P.S. Stand by for another post about mapping home drives

MicrodigitUK, good to see you were spending your Saturday night productively! For about the last twenty minutes Frog has been running like really really slow-running treacle. No major stuff going on here, just a normal amount of users online, but it was taking about two minutes just to get to the login page (no FrogLive)...and now, all of a sudden, it's a speedy as anything. Really odd. How's things with you this so far this week, Pete? UPDATE: Just checked FrogLive on my machine here at work, it's using 63MB! What the hell?!
