  1. Spotted this the other day (Thinking outside the box), and it has now been confirmed it does apply to education (A) plans. In short, everyone on Office 365 for Business will soon be upgraded to a default storage size of 1TB per user. Despite the wording in the announcement, it isn't immediate but will be rolled out soon, and it does apply internationally: Unfortunately there's no immediate change on the 5,000 items limit per SharePoint library, so your 1TB can only be made up of just under 5,000 files, but hopefully that will be addressed in time.

  2. It depends a lot on the surface - in some cases you would be surprised how well it holds up. Smooth plastics and metals do wear/clean off more easily, as you suspect, but the 'crackled' plastic finish on a lot of IT kit takes the marking remarkably well; in a test case on a Lenovo X131e, I have actually tried very very hard to remove a standard UV marking using all sorts of solvents and cleaners, and I can still see the marking under UV. Getting a good quality pen makes a big difference too. Some free ones I got from the local Neighbourhood Watch were decidedly sub-par, but the ones I got from Crime Prevention Products have been excellent.
  3. We usually transfer videos off our iPads by uploading them to Google Docs. Uploading using the Google Docs app does the rotation automatically.
  4. I was first stung by this about 7 years ago. A lot of BIOS builds have an additional setting you need to change to prevent it. On Dell machines it's labelled "Allow Non-admin Password Changes", and as you've found, in its default state it allows someone to set the HD password even if a BIOS setup password is set.
  5. I'm emigrating to the US, new job is as IT Manager at a private school on the east coast - they haven't officially announced yet so don't want to step on any toes by naming publicly.
  6. We are advertising the following vacancy as of today: A full-time IT Network Manager is required to work within the Bursarial department and with the ICT Coordinator (teacher). The job involves responsibility for the maintenance, development and management of the IT network (200 workstations) and assistance with the school’s website. A technical background in IT, an appropriate professional qualification and excellent customer service skills are required. The post is full-time throughout the year and is available for an immediate start. Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience (expected range £28k-32k pa). Further information about the school is available on our website at http://www.crosfields.com, and an application form and job specification are attached below. Application deadline: 9 May 2014 This is my current job at the school, and is becoming vacant as of half term as I am moving on to another institution who needed me ASAP, hence the short recruitment timeframe. We are well aware this doesn’t leave us a huge amount of time, but don’t be put off if you’re currently on a notice period that would go beyond half term as we have contingency plans in the works for this and would discuss arrangements for handover with individual candidates. We intend to shortlist immediately after the closing date and interview promptly. The successful candidate will be taking over a well-resourced network of about 160 Windows 8.1 workstations and 16 virtualised servers across 3 physical hosts (mix of Server 2008 R2 through Server 2012 R2). The workstations are mostly desktops, with one class set of 20 laptops and a handful of staff laptops. We also have a class set of 20 iPads for use in Reception - Year 4. Formal enquiries and applications should be made to the school Bursar: details in the full job ad attached. If you would like to have an informal discussion about the technical side of the job, please feel free to send me a PM and we can arrange a quick chat. 7. Sorry, should have updated the thread sooner - this has been sold.
  8. No problems with any others issued by the same CA.
  9. I've had a cert from my internal CA installed on my Ruckus controller ever since the controller was first installed. It used to work just fine. However, a couple of months ago, Google Chrome (and only Chrome) started complaining that the server name doesn't match when I try to access the web interface: As you can see from the above error, it appears to be utter nonsense, because Chrome displays both the cert name and the server name in the message, and they are identical. Firefox and IE don't have any problem with this cert; it is in date, and the CA is trusted. Chrome itself also used to have no problems with this cert. Any ideas why this is happening?
  10. It does both. Once a Search Rule is created, anything not matched by the specified rules doesn't get synced.
  11. Yep, you do this in the Org Units section, on the Search Rules tab. Official docs are here to get you started: Org Unit Search Rules Doing it by OU is simpler to implement but it just uses LDAP filter queries so group membership should be possible if that's the preferred option.
  12. This was briefly hinted at in the summer in a post about new group policy settings in Windows 8.1, but when I saw a post today spelling out what it actually meant, I was pretty surprised: Warning!!!--Group Policy Logon Scripts Delays in Windows 8.1 - Group Policy Software - SDM Software | Group Policy Management & Administration Tools That's the default value; luckily the aforementioned GP setting allows you to override that: Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy\Configure Logon Script Delay
  13. Just a quick bump as this is still available if anyone else is interested.
  14. Apologies for not getting back about this sooner: our accountant has been dealing with our annual financial audit so has been a bit busy. Bank transfer is the preferred option, personal cheque if you want but I won't be allowed to send until it clears. We can also accept CC payment over the phone but there is a 2.5% surcharge which we would have to ask you to cover. I have had another expression of interest by PM but it's only right I give @newpersn first refusal. More specs on the tablet are here: Latitude ST | Dell UK. For some reason the processor isn't listed on that page: it's an Atom Z670 Postage is likely to be between £10-15 (mainland UK only).
  15. I don't see why not. Pretty sure we still accept personal cheques, or you can pay by bank transfer if you prefer. Will check with the Bursary tomorrow.
  16. Sorry, should have made that clear: this is a school sale. However, we are an independent so VAT has been paid on the original purchase.
  17. We bought a Dell Latitude ST last year to try out, but it didn't suit our needs in the end. Frankly, it isn't a very good tablet as despite having an SSD (64GB) the underpowered Atom processor makes it a bit sluggish. I could also never get the wireless to work on Windows 8; it only works on Windows 7. If that hasn't put you off, or if you bought a few of them and would like a spare, I'd rather it go to someone here than on eBay. It will come with no OS installed but has a Windows 7 Home Premium COA. Not sure on the warranty status as the Dell support site helpfully displays "Warranty information for this product is not available" when I put in the Service Tag. We also bought the official charging dock for it which has AC in, wired Ethernet, HDMI out, 3x additional USB sockets, and a headphone/speaker jack. All in practically mint condition, £100 for the lot, plus shipping (free if you can pick up from Reading).
  18. Stoke is a bit far for me to pop in or I would offer. It is possible to have split delivery. We currently have Gmail via Google Apps for our pupils and on-premises Exchange for our staff, all though the same domain. It's not as tidy as I would like it but it is technically possible. It's true that the Word Web App has no File > New menu, but when you are in a SharePoint/SkyDrive Pro folder in the browser there is a very prominent New Document link that produces this menu: So basically you create the document in the folder and then open it, no upload required. Ultimately when it comes to functionality, both of these have free plans. You've already got Google set up to see what it can do. There is nothing stopping you from setting up Office 365 as well and putting it through it's paces on the A2 plan. @CyberNerd is right that Google Apps gives you a sign-in to the whole suite of Google applications, but what we've found is that, frankly, no-one cares to use them. If you have forward thinking staff, or drive from the top, Google has a wider feature set, but if your needs are quite focused then it may not matter.
  19. We have both so I have a fair bit of experience comparing the two. It depends a lot on what features are your priorities, who will be using it, and what type of school you are. For example: Our staff prefer Exchange to Gmail (and I wholeheartedly agree). That may differ depending on your staff. If you want pupil email and you need to be able to have a list of words to monitor for (e.g. swearing, bullying terms), that is much easier to do in Google Apps than in Office 365. If you are planning to use ADFS, however, it's easier to log into a pupil email box with Office 365 than with Google Apps because the security delegation is easier to set up and use. If you aren't using ADFS, then the tools for synchronising usernames and passwords are better for Office 365 than for Google Apps. (Google Apps Password Sync does not support domains that have even a single DC running as a Server Core install, for example). For document collaboration, the Office Web Apps are superior to Google Docs, in my opinion. You also get to use the normal Office desktop apps and still have multiple people working on 1 document simultaneously. That said, for web document collaboration, Google Apps seemed a bit more responsive to updates from large numbers of people when we tried it. What I'm getting at is there is no simple answer. Are you looking for a trainer as per your subject, or someone to come and talk through the options with SMT? What area are you in?
  20. FYI I'm pulling another slightly younger server in a day or two that I will be looking to give away too. Will post details once I've decommissioned it and cleaned off the disks.
  21. Just on the off chance anyone wants this, I have just removed our old RM DualServe Pro from the rack as it's been finally retired from its second life as a Hyper-V server. It's out of warranty but everything is still working fine, so if you have one of these and would like a spare (or you're mad enough to use it in production or for testing) then it's free to anyone who can collect from Reading, Berkshire. Rough specs: 1x Intel Xeon 5050 SL96C 3.00 GHz 6GB RAM 3x 160GB SAS HDs (15k RPM) 2x PSUs (redundant) SCSI DVD drive & AIT3 tape drive (working AFAIK, but not used in a few years)* OEM sliding rail kit (no cable management arm)
  22. I signed this a while ago but forgot to post it here, but I think it's probably something many of us would support. Here's the basics: Currently there is no legal duty to report alleged or suspected abuse of children. Creating a legal duty has already been urged by many children's and abuse victims charities, some of whom have started this petition. It was also a key recommendation by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary in their report on the Jimmy Savile enquiry. Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Sweden, USA, and the Republic of Ireland already have mandatory reporting enshrined in law. Despite the clear case in favour, and the repeated examples of cover-ups in abuse cases, the Government currently has no plans to introduce such a law in the UK. Want that to change? Read the full rationale behind the move and sign the petition here: Change.org: Introduce law requiring adults working with children to report alleged abuse - NAPAC, Survivors UK, Respond, IID + The Survivors Trust
  23. Sterling job, works perfectly. I tried something similar myself but never quite managed it. Thanks!
  24. It's not a Google product any more, but they are still working closely with Google due to the integration with Google Earth. There has been a reply on my request this afternoon with a link explaining how to cause the licence to expire immediately, but you'd have to do it on every machine individually:
  25. There's no way to do that at present. I raised this with the SketchUp team in May and followed it up again today; as per their advice, I have posted a feature request in their forums here: Google Product Forums › SketchUp › Please provide a SketchUp Make installer that does NOT include the Pro trial Anyone who would like to add their 2p and/or support to this would be welcome to comment.
