We have Acid and cubase in the music suites but in the music practice rooms we've been using audacity for about 3 terms now and have never had a problem. We also use it in the IT suites for creating podcasts because the kids get their heads round it quickly. Maybe we're just lucky. (crosses fingers:) )

We use Audacity (free recording software) Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder It multitracks and exports as wav or mp3. In the music practice rooms we have some older PCs running audacity and boundary mics which the students use to record their practices and exams. Languages are using Coomber tape recorders this year but will be moving over to audacity with a desktop mic or boundary mic next time they need to record. Boundary microphone, unidirectional and omnidirectional, 1k Ohm - Microphones - SoloTechnic Files can be kept small on disc by using the mp3 export and then burnt to disc for archiving or sending to the exam board.
