are you saying If I ghost a machine and tracert that machines IP address from machine I can see where the trafffic leeping around? all machines, switches etc is on the same subnet 255.255.240.0 agregation is def the way forward, at the moment I want to aggregate the racks new 3com switch to a dell switch, is this possible with mixed brands? I've heard that this can be a little tricky

if the cachepilot is disabled in IE you get an error page, only way to get out on to the net is if you set a static IP address and set the gateway to point to the router. so no user can not get out on the net. All out 3com switches are managed.

Hi gang, OK here is a few questions I am searching answers for. during the Easter holidays we decommissioned our old servers (4 year old) and have commissioned the following SAN 4TB Hitachi RAID 6 4 Intel servers apple Xserver 2TB Mirror 3COM 5000 series switch UPS cant remember the model 11 tape backup solution which is configured to backup daily, weekly, monthly, annual (on hold) and ghost images (on hold) all is sitting in a nice 42U rack each server is using ISCSI on VLAN and the Ethernet cards have been teamed and VLAN'ed so performance is really good. My next step is to replace all the 3com switches in the school and update to the latest range. at the moment the servers are connected to the network via 1gb copper. As I am happy with 3com I will be sticking with them. Is anyone using the 4000 series which you can use stacking, I'm also thinking about aggregating the servers 1gb connection to the the network so we have 2gb link. I haven't looked at switches in some time so I feel a little out of my depth at present in what to go for and how to configure. I must note we already have a fiber backbone in place. Ghost imaging I noticed while we were ghosting it was taking 5 hours to send a an image to a room of 30 PC's (14GB 30mb/m) I managed to track down the problem. all traffic was going through the cache pilot which is set as out gateway 10.64.64.4. so I disconnected the switch from the network and we suddenly started to see ridiculous speeds again. Has anyone else come across this problem? could the gateway be set differently so it points to our router? I'm confused and worried as soon as we reconnect the cache pilot it has a noticeable effect on the network. so far the new servers have been performing really well without any error messages. the weakest link now is our switches. Myself and the IT coordinator have talked about this and know that this financial year we need to replace the switches.

everyone back today and all went well... usual problems was people had for gotten their passwords and a member of staff had for gotten to grab her database of pupil profiles on to her memory stick. I've temporarily made the machines work with the new servers but need to do a proper install and create new images for each subject area. got a busy few weeks ahead. not bad for my first migration had a small dilemma last week while sending images. images were transferring at mb/m rather that 700-1200 mb/m tracked it down to the cache server. all the data traffic was going through the cache first and then on to the machines that were been imaged. I've got allot of testing left to be done and performance tweaking on the servers and switches, so I will be calling on help in the next few weeks my office is allot tidier now, finally got a 42U rack and the school now has its first lot of rack mount servers which means I can now get rid of them cluttering pedestal servers

imo I would asses each of you technician's abaility, But a good start is the A+ It should only take them a month to read and practice the material before taking the harware and software exams. best book imo is Mike Myers as suggested. I personally think university is not the way forward as it dosen't cover anything in depth like the A+ or any of the mcp exams do. which is what you need for an IT support role. my technician has a uni degree and he agrees with me that it dose not prepare you for an IT role. He is studying the A+ and I've agreed to put him in for the exams soon as he and I feel he is ready. next would be the N+ basic but but teaches you the basics should they wish to take on cisco CCNA course which goes in to some depth at the start with basic N+ stuff. again mike Myers does an excellent N+ book. only one exam for this. I think self study is the way forward if budget is tight and cant afford to put them on a course at a local college. I think you will need to put a couple of hours aside each week with them to answer any questions and give guidence where needed.

turns out 8 days to install 4 2k8 servers, an xserver and a mac suite is not long enough to complete. Bummer!! back in today to: ghost remaining 200 machines install SIMS nod32 ActivSoftware make sure all printers work for each area, and then lots of testing... If I have time whats everyone else doing today?

Hi gang, I've looked at the wiki which has a linkl to another site which has instruction and a link to a mocule for enabling the website to a be viewed nicely on a pda/iphone. the link to download the module appears to have been removed. Is the any other alternatives or has anyone got the module stshed away that I can have. The wife is out tonight so I was thinking about setting this up to night. OK finally getting some where now. Equiinet are currently testing the latest software update (V5.2.0 for V5 cachepilots to allow binding with server 2008. That answers the question to why I can joine it to server 2008 using either LDAP or Active Directory. what a farse on!

ok founf the setting on the local group policy, its not in the domain group policy which is where we were looking. still no joy

I am on 'three' network and the coverage in my area is alittle rubbish at times, unless I go to a town or city.

Agree two signs of hdd failure in a caddy 1. Ticking sound 2. if its not making a ticking sound it could be a heat issue on the hdd. If you already have data on it you may have send away for data retreval... cost between £80 - £250. otherwise its a faulty usb inteface problem on the caddy.

the power is there, it only shows as full once they have crossed the pit start/finish line. it gives them about 12 seconds of addition hp 80 I think, then once they have passed the line the battery shows as full again. they have control over how much they use during the lap, so its not the case of pres the button and thats it.
