I checked the scheduled tasks and nothing is set except the A/V and spyware. I checked the event log last time but I think I might give that another look, but nothing showed up last time and it's doing it every day. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I set one of these up for a private customer just recently, after she had spent 7 hours trying to do it! It didn't take too long to connect her WiFi, and set up her itunes (without the album covers because she didn't have an itunes account) I agree the screen is sometimes unresponsive which slows things up. Lovely toy, but not for me. Although I don't want nor need the internet or email facility, I'm next to a PC at least 22 hours a day, the camera is dreadful and there is no word, excel or powerpoint equivalent on it. 8Gb is going to be filled up pretty quick with music and 16Gb is not much better. Also no smartcard or similar slot. Lot of money for a pretty toy as well.

It pretty much sounds like the coffee has dried over the fan, a simple replacement should do it if everything else is booting up OK. Incidently milk is THE most disgusting think to drop into electronic components. However, removing them and washing using a fine brush to move the larger deposits then rinsing in water with a little unperfumed basic dishwasher rinseaid should ensure that you get no water stain deposits, (also helps to ensure that the water runs off) DRY THOROUGHLY and reinstall. Boot up and hope that the milk didn't cause a short to fry the component before you worked on it. Doesn't always work but it's worth a try. Working in infant schools presents it's own challenges!

I have one PC on our Admin network that automatically shuts down every night at 6pm. It is the only one that does it, it has not been told to do it, the power settings are 'always on', the server is not telling it to shut down. There are no timed updates set on it either. So why is it shutting down? Why do I want it to stop, the person using it is the head and she is often here after 6pm! When it shuts down, it does it suddenly and does not object if she restarts it immediately. I've searched the MS site and found nothing. PC is running XP Pro SP2 and Server is 2003 standard SP2, if anyone can help I would be grateful. Denise

On the other hand I had the same problem, and the cause - It was under a desk in a very dusty office and used as a resting place for the staff's jumpers, scarves, coat's. The server was so full of fluff and dust it was thickly felted onto the boards, I just had to peel them off. The staff didn't believe me.

So long as you're not physically swiping the components it's never been a problem. I'm allergic to dust - bit of a problem - so I always hoover and it's worked for 10 years now. A small paintbrush - real hair - is very useful for getting into those stickier areas and flicking around the edges of fans - some of the dust gets very ingrained. I could never get the schools to pay for air cans, besides I would have been a sneezing wreck almost immediately so no good for me.

When it comes to software cleanups - I get the PC to do the work for me. Task setting on day one, cleanup internet files on shutdown, empty deleted emails, etc. Defrag on a schedule automatically and automatic download of updates and antivirus cut down on regular visits to PC's to carry the tasks out manually. Remote login is great for checking updates and cleanups are happening, Servers are on a regular backup and defrag schedule overnight, just check the logs on a regular basis to make sure it's all happening. To make sure that internet access is not slowed down I use spywareblaster and spybot to make sure the systems are kept relatively clean. Especially important for teachers laptops. Having limited hours at each site I visit means it's very important to set this all up the day the PC is installed otherwise it very quickly gets out of hand.

Depending on location really. Reception classes get a good hoovering inside and out and I go over the keyboards with a fine paintbrush - it's all the fluff from their new clothes that's the problem - besides the sand and glitter! Admin Pc's I hoover the insides at least once a year and the remainder get a quick clean whenever I visit them. Pet hate is cleaners with abrasive cloths on flat screens... I've just had three brand new ones ruined by the new cleaner and her polish. Agree on the mice balls, transferring to optical is better - until they put gluestick on the bottom then it's a lot of picking to get the glue off the sensor.
