Just wondering what is working for everyone for user naming conventions in AD. We are building a new AD and want to avoid duplicates but yet something that is not too long or complicated. Was thinking first 4 chars of first name followed by first four chars of last name.

We have some machine that were imaged with a certain image that all have the same problem. They do not get certain settings from Computer Settings portion of the GPO. These settings seem to all be in the System Settings portion which includes things like Restricted Groups, File System, etc. None of these are applying. Very frustrating, has anyone seen this before, I know I sure haven't and it's driving me nuts. I have other machines in same OU that work fine so I know the policy is OK. gpresult does not show any errors or hints, either does event viewer. gpresult /h gpreport does not show the settings as being set but yet the GPO is listed as loaded. Any ideas?

I've seen it done elsewhere and it seems to work well for them.

We are deploying many carts of netbooks and pulling out most labs. How do others manage their netbook carts? I am thinking it will be a nightmare to manage and the best solution would be to place an ethernet switch in the cart with a connection to each netbook and one connection going external to be plugged into a network drop overnight. This way we can wake on lan and perform updates and installations in the off hours.

I have setup many Windows XP laptop carts with success in the past. Doing my first Windows 7 cart now and I am running into a few issues. Login seems to take way longer, sometime the students will not get their folder redirection, etc. Has anybody else run into issues running Windows 7 on a cart of laptops?

Just trying to get an idea for how others feel using roaming profiles on their school network. We are currently using roaming profiles along with folder redirection. I am thinking of switching all students to a mandatory profile or possibly a local profile to speed up logins via wireless without having to worry about problems with limiting profile size. Still deciding if teachers benefit from roaming profiles or not.
