As far as cost effective is concerned, with a vanilla network, you also have to weigh up the technician or network manager's wage, adding about 30% for on costs and then compare it with the cost of RM. Our solution is a semi managed network with some equipment guarantees e.g. Server and filters. We purchase our PCs from whoever we want and then add the RM stuff to them. We also employ a technician to assist us with development and the day to day stuff. I sleep at night because I have RM to rely on if my Technician should leave or become ill. There are times when I have found RM frustrating but when we had a major issue they were there to help me resolve the issue in a reasonable time frame.

Stayed with RM as vanilla networks tend to be created in the shape of the current technician. Technician leaves, result, new technician takes nearly six months to unpick the previous work and then change it into their image. At least with RM I have some stability as I am not dependant on an individual technician.

We are currently using ntbackup on server 2003 with 20gb tapes. We are looking for any recommendations / suggestions about compression as we are running out of room and have no money to buy external drives at the mo. Do people compress using winrar etc then back up the compressed file? or are there other / better methods. Thanks for any help.

On a new server created a domain. Had to take the domain down to rename the server, recreated the domain. Had to take the domain down again to rename server (Dont ask, long story) recreated domain. Now, trust relationships will not work, server cannot be contacted via other servers, will not accept admin password remotely or an account with admin privelages (Related?) and I have 3 administrator accounts when I look in documents and settings, user accounts. Can I delete the unused admin accounts, is there any other way of returning to a single admin without taking down the domain? I would be grateful for any help you can offer.

How many of us actually end up working unpaid through school holidays as it is easier for us to work on things when the children and teachers are not in hassling us constantly. How many of us get called in unpaid at holiday time to fix PCs because the odd teacher wishes to come in. My vote is: Paid call out and attendance Proper school shutdown times Training for teachers in the use of IT that is compulsory. How can we expect individuals who left school, went straight to college then straight into teaching 10 20 or 30 years ago to keep abreast of modern developments? There are some exceptions to this and to those apologies and keep up the good work, just spread your knowledge and enthuse your fellow professionals.
