Firstly, very sorry if this is not the right area to post this in, sat here for 10 minutes trying to work out where to post this! Basically, we've heard mutterings that we are suppose to be backing up our SIMS data to a remote offsite location more than 3 and a half miles away so that the data can be accessed if the school has to relocate for some reason. Can anyone confirm or deny this? again apologies if this is the wrong area to post this.

I seek advice from the great hive mind of edugeek :-) on the same kind of issue. As it's easter I decided to give our IT rooms an overhaul and tidy up some of the computers a bit, I've discovered that about 10 of them are still running update 14 of the java, so I thought 'oh lets get these computers upgraded to the right version as AD doesn't seem to be deploying the java update to them' little did i know it would turn into a nightmare for me. basically I have hit a snag where i physically cannot get the update 14 of java to remove itself from my sight, it refuses to update, it refuses to uninstall, i even tried getting my hands on a .msi of the 14 update, but it still refuses, i keep getting the cannot find the msi on network error, as it was hosted on an old server before I started (which is why i went hunting for the 14 update msi, but it just errors saying it's not valid) I've even tried FN-GM's script from above, and java just refuses to budge! Any suggestions (or even pointing out blind stupid mistakes i've made here) would be much appreated.

Hi, firstly sorry if this post makes little to no sense, it's only my second week into my new job as the IT Technician of a state grammar school and it's been information overload already :-) I've recently been handed 20 new iPod touches along with a new macbook to look after. They would like to use the ipod's in lessons, I'm currently learning my way around the iphone configuration utility to work out how to lock down parts of the ipods. I've used apple products for a while, but I was wondering if anyone out there could give a new guy any advice on the best kinds of set up (i've already had a skim of the forums and found some info) but my main question was are there any free apps that anyone has come across that may be useful in a classroom environment for different subjects? The head suggested that english and Languages had expressed an interest. Any suggestions welcome for the new guy to a school environment! :-)
