Does anyone else publish e-portal out across the internet? One of the things stopping us doing so at the moment is that the sessions appear to be unencrypted which is OK on our internal network but we think this is an issue if we were to allow access to it by parents across the internet. We were thinking of publishing it and setting up our ISA server to dole out a certificate and only handle https requests (e.g. https://eportal.ourcollege.net) from external clients but keeping the internal side unencrypted :- home user <----https----> ISA <---http----> SQL-SERVER Does anyone else do this or are there any other methods that people know of to make this activity safe.

Feeling silly now! Having read the blurb on Zimbra more carefully than when this project all started a while ago, I reckon we might just investigate this further. Now I trawl back through my memory, one thing that did put us off initially was that we were rather hoping to use this as a mail server and somewhere to pop an installation of Moodle and it seems that Zimbra likes to be the only application suite running on the server.

Thanks for the suggestion. We had looked at this and we might look to this in the future if we actually manage to get decent broadband connectivity up here in the soggy North! The server I have been given is hosted somewhere deep inside 1and1's data centre and is sitting there chugging away with a basic installation of Ubuntu. I'm quite happy to script something to parse the csv file (have test server, have terrier-like mentality and some knowledge of C!!) - just wondered if the format of something like vpopmail with Postfix was going to be the easiest method of adding users (seems to be a matter of running vadduser for each user - can't be _that_ hard to script now can it!!)

Hi there, I have just been given the task of setting up an email server for a new domain that we have. I've created the relevant A records and MX records for the domain which are all pointing in the right place. Now to roll the sleeves up and get stuck in. I'm thinking along the lines of using Dovecot and Squirrelmail which all seem pretty straighforward to set up and I've had a bit of a play on an old workstation and it all works quite nicely. Some advice however about setting up the email accounts themselves. I want to be able to have my new domain set up as a virtual domain on the server with virtual users - probably using MySQL. I also have a requirement to create hundreds of accounts at once on this server (we are basically giving all our students an email address) from a csv file or something similar. I've had a look at various config tools etc. (vpopmail and ISPconfig for example) but none of them seem to really fulfil this requirement. I'd also like to be able to add another field to their virtual account so that I can mark their year of entry to the school so managing ex-students is easier. Any ideas?

Has anyone used RM Safetynet to successfully allow certain Youtube vids? If I want to allow something like :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BouKBkQAGA I was under the impression that I merely needed to add the URL without the http:// bit. In reality what happens is that it looks like a throwback to the bad old days of Compuserve and tells me that I don't have Flash or Java enabled! Any ideas before I start laying into RM? Ta

When we configure a laptop for a member of staff they are made a local administrator on that machine. We also add a number of network shares (using their domain username and password) for them which map to our shared, secure share and public areas and we also use offline files on their personal work area so anything they do at home can be kept in sync with school. Making them local admins means that they can install their own broadband at home which means they can use their laptops to come into the school system via a VPN and Terminal Services setup that we have. It seems to work and we get very, very few problems. Our AV software has both network and standalone versions so that is no problem. We used to make them log onto the domain but we found that offline files didn't work properly. It works like a dream now.

We've managed to acquire the first series on DVD so we've been revisiting it at lunchtimes over this hols. The series rings about 90% true to my experiences in the electronics industry and in schools. The office looks in about the same condition as ours, there are loads of traits similar in ourselves and all the oddbods I've ever met in IT support and the companies attitude towards the IT people is about spot on. Can't wait for the new series - even my other half (who is a teacher!) can't wait as she too recognises the traits too. Frightening really.

Just for information purposes, I logged onto the licensing site and I've been able to download the .bin file for CS2 from there. Phew!!

Hello all, Does anyone have any idea where I can get my mitts on the media for CS2 for Macs? I've got a site license for both Macs and Windows but only purchased the Windows CD at the time I got the license - now all my suppliers are telling me they can't get the disk anymore and Adobe's useful answer was to buy CS3! TIA
